Kazakhstan, the second largest country in the CIS region, with a current population of 19 million people, is a newcomer to the research arena, with the first international trials being initiated in 2009. However, during the past five years, the interest towards Kazakhstan and the number of clinical studies conducted there has been growing exponentially. Big pharma like AbbVie, Bayer and Merck have been turning to Kazakhstan as a target country to conduct their trials.

Based on a 2019 government statistics report, there are about 800 hospitals in Kazakhstan. Moreover, high patient concentration at hospitals makes it easier to identify patients who meet the inclusion criteria in a study protocol, hence the trend of conducting large-scale research in Kazakhstan by global pharma.
