Ever been stuck in a never-ending checkout line at the grocery store? Well, you can thank David R. Humble for the genius idea of self-service checkout, born in the 1980s during a fateful day in a South Florida grocery store. šŸ›ļø

Picture this: David was in line, the clerk was scanning items slower than a snail, and the frustration was real. But then, the guy in front of him lost his cool and took matters into his own hands, literally! He grabbed the scanner and started scanning his items. 🤯

That got David thinking – why not let customers scan their own items and eliminate those never-ending queues? šŸ¤”

Fast forward to 1984, David convinced his company's top brass, developed the first prototype, and CheckRobot was born. It took three years and five million dollars, but the first self-service checkout machines, then called automated checkout machines (ACM), finally made their debut in a Kroger store in Atlanta in July 1986. šŸ”„

Imagine the challenge the engineers faced – the first CheckRobot was like an airport luggage scanner! Scanning items was easy, but it had to detect loose items, prevent fraud, and more. They used lasers to measure items, and if there was a mismatch, the process had to be repeated. Talk about patience! šŸ˜…

Meanwhile, competitors like NCR used weight-checking systems. The customer had to place scanned items on a scale, and if there was a discrepancy, the staff was alerted.

So, next time you breeze through a self-service checkout, remember the ingenuity behind it! šŸ™Œ

šŸ—£ Although studies show that older generations prefer face-to-face communication, that has rapidly changed after COVID-19 pandemic. Different digital solutions and technology used in the pandemic was introduced as a way of staying connected and avoiding risks of catching the virus. Now that pandemic has gone for good people associate these solutions with something that gave them great benefits and keep using even after the pandemic.

šŸ‘“šŸ‘µ It is very important to find ways how to make self-service devices accessible for everyone. Although more and more Gen-Z individuals are taking over the consumer market with their preferences of interaction in customer service related industries, it is crucial that we make self-service industry easy to use not only for the younger but also older generations.

āž”ļøLines are probably one of the most annoying things we get across in our daily lives. Especially if we're in hurry. And as the years go by we tend to get even more busier and seek for faster solutions to ease or mind with the seemingly endless errands of our work's and personal lives.

šŸ•˜And this is a tendency which is no where near on the way of stopping. Year by year with the advancements of technology our patience lessens and need for instant gratification increases.

šŸ“‹Based on Qminder report 75% of customers say that queues are the worst part of their shopping experience. But that can be easily changed if you implement self-service solutions in your business. Not only that but a line (pun intended) of many other benefits.

šŸ’­ Some has seen them both, some - one of them, maybe someone hasn't seen any of them yet, but still has a knowledge about what they are, because it's just simply impossible to not know about it, if you use the Internet.

šŸ’… šŸ•µā€ā™‚ļø Cinema phenomenon Barbenheimer is probably something that has been in the midst of a lot of conversations lately. But what is also interesting, that cinema is one of the many industries benefiting and successfully implementing self-service solutions in their businesses.
