💨💨💨 FEELING 'GASSIER' after GASTRIC BYPASS surgery? Farting 🙈, belching 🙈, bloating? You’re not alone – and here is why! 💨💨💨

After gastric bypass surgery, it’s quite common for people to notice more intestinal gas than before.

There can be several reasons for this:

1️⃣ Changes in digestion – Food bypasses part of the stomach and small intestine, so it’s not broken down and absorbed in exactly the same way as before. This can leave more undigested food for bacteria in the large intestine, which produce gas.

2️⃣ Bacterial changes – The gut microbiome may shift after surgery, which can influence how food is fermented and how much gas is produced.

3️⃣ Food intolerance – Some people become more sensitive to certain products after surgery, especially dairy (lactose), high-fat meals, and high-protein foods like beans, some mushrooms which can all increase gas. Some veggies tend to cause more gas – such as onions and cabbage.

4️⃣ Air swallowing – Eating too quickly, drinking too fast, or chewing gum can make you swallow extra air, which contributes to bloating and gas.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO REDUCE GAS AFTER GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY:

☑️ Eat slowly and chew thoroughly. Digestion process starts in mouth
☑️ Avoid carbonated drinks
☑️ Limit foods known to cause gas (beans, cabbage, onions, sugar, alcohol, pastries)
☑️ Keep a food diary to identify your personal triggers
☑️ Consume more naturally fermented products like kefir, sauerkraut, live yogurt, kombucha, kimchi
☑️ Consider taking a probiotic to improve gut flora

♦️ If gas is accompanied by persistent pain, diarrhoea, or bad-smelling stools, it’s worth checking for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or food intolerances, which can happen after bypass.

BEFORE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY
A Tip That Can Change Your Journey

One of the best things you can do before your surgery is to start making small, realistic changes now – even if they feel tiny.

🫑 EAT SLOWLY. Practice eating slowly – put your fork down between bites.

🫗 WATER. Sip water throughout the day instead of drinking large amounts at once.

🥂 SUGARS. Cut back on sugary drinks and replace them with water or herbal tea.

🤽‍♀️ MOVE. Add gentle daily movement – a short walk counts!

👩‍🦰 LEARN YOUR BODY. Listen to your body’s signals – notice when you are truly hungry vs. eating out of habit.

These habits will help your body prepare for surgery, make recovery easier, and set you up for long-term success.

Remember – weight loss surgery is a powerful tool, and your mindset and habits are the keys that keep the results for life 💛

Weight Loss Latvia

Weight Loss Latvia is a bariatric surgery service provider in Latvia. We help people fighting obesity to finally obtain longterm success results in their weight loss journeys. With bariatric surgery in average people loose 70-85% of their excess weight during a year or two. These life changing goals are achieved by having gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy surgery performed by certified and skilled bariatric surgeons Dr Olegs Kozlovskis and Dr Juris Žarinovs at Sigulda Hospital in Latvia and, of course, a person's longterm commitment and effort.

Patient story. Lauren, her initial weight was 98 kg, BMI 36.4 and she suffered from joint disease. She was on strong medications and realised she has to do something to improve her condition. She underwent the gastric bypass surgery in 2011. Today, 2020, her weight is still 63 kg, overall health condition is improved, she is off the medications and she says that this was the best decision, she ever made for herself.

Patient story 2. Paul, initial weight 145 kg, BMI 44.7. Pain in knees, pre-diabetic condition. Was eating everything, too big portions and irregularly. The excess weight was a problem at his work. He had a gastric bypass surgery on 2012. During a 1.5 years post-op Paul went down to 82 kg, solved his health issues and had much more energy for work. Today, 2020, he has put on a little of weight back to 90 kg which is comfortable for him.
