☘️ You know that one friend...
- You’re sitting there with a bowl of green leaves, feeling very proud of yourself… and somehow you still put on weight.

- Meanwhile she has a full roast dinner, two glasses of wine, a slice of cake – maybe another slice “just because” – and the next morning she looks exactly the same.

It honestly feels like you could smell a Victoria sponge and gain a kilo, doesn’t it? 🙄

So… what on earth is going on?

1️⃣ It’s not your willpower – it’s biology

Some bodies are simply better at storing energy.
Your body might think it’s being clever and protecting you, especially if you’ve -

• yo-yo dieted on and off for years
• lost weight and regained it several times
• been under stress
• had hormonal changes (thyroid, PCOS, perimenopause, menopause)

- Your metabolism becomes cautious. Even when you eat very little, your body says - “..keep hold of this. Just in case.”

- Your cake-eating friend's body is still happily burning energy instead of guarding it like a precious treasure.

2️⃣ Hunger hormones play dirty tricks

People who gain weight “from nothing” often have a mix-up with hormones like:
• Leptin – the one that says “I’m full now.”
• Ghrelin – the one that shouts “Feed me immediately.”
There are others - now so popular GLP-1, Peptide YY, Cholecystokinin...

When these get out of balance, you don’t just feel hungrier – your body also burns fewer calories, even at rest.

So you’re not eating more.
Your body is simply burning less.

3️⃣ Years of dieting teach your body to panic

Every strict diet teaches your body a lesson - food is unreliable. We must store everything.

That’s why after many “I’ll start Monday” cycles, weight gain can happen even when you’re being good. Your body has learnt to survive, not slim.

4️⃣ Stress makes fat stick

Stress hormones (especially cortisol) are brilliant at turning a salad into belly fat.
Busy mind, emotional load, always being the strong one – your body reads that as danger and quietly holds on to weight.

☀️ And the good news?
Those rules can be changed – not with punishment and endless dieting, but by working with your biology instead of fighting it.

Next time you feel like you gained weight from breathing near a bakery… remember – it’s not the cake.
It’s the system. And the system is fixable and if nothing works, there is an effective medical tool like weight loss surgery. 💛

OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY CONTRIBUTE TO PREMATURE DEATHS. World Obesity Atlas 2025

The latest World Obesity Atlas 2025 reveals a global health crisis: obesity is rising fast and most countries are unprepared.

• The number of adults living with obesity is projected to increase by 115% between 2010 and 2030 — from 524 million to 1.13 billion people worldwide.

• Overweight and obesity contribute to premature deaths from diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke — about 1.6 million deaths annually.

• Most countries lack adequate policies and health systems to manage obesity, and few are on track to meet global targets.

✔ This crisis shows the urgent need for prevention, treatment access, and obesity-focused medical care.

🔺🔻 Why Smoking Is Especially Dangerous for Bariatric Patients?

👉 Bariatric and general surgeon Dr Olegs Kozlovskis recommends quit smoking at least 4-6 weeks prior to your bariatric surgery.

Smoking already increases several well-known health risks, including:
- blood clotting and stroke
- heart attack
- high blood pressure
- COPD and breathing difficulties
- lung, throat and esophageal cancer
- slow wound healing and wound infections
Smoking after bariatric surgery makes these risks become even more serious.

DIETARY GUIDELINES AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY
Thought of starting eating after bariatric surgery often feels frustrating. Here I am sharing with you how eating after bariatric surgery starts and continuous.

🟢 A healthy, balanced diet is essential after weight loss surgery. The right foods will help you heal safely, lose weight effectively, and meet your nutritional needs long-term.

🟢 All bariatric patients—whether you’ve had a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass—follow a 4-stage post-surgery diet plan. Find an overview of each stage in the article. Before your surgery, we will also provide you dietary plan by email.

🟢 To support you even further, you will receive 3 months of free guidance from our UK-based expert bariatric dietitian, Van Patel.

Usually there are 4 post-operation stages -

✅ STAGE 1 – LIQUIDS (First 10–14 Days)
This stage begins immediately after surgery and lasts up to two weeks.

✅ STAGE 2 – PUREED FOODS (approx. weeks 2–4 post op)
Food should have the consistency of thin mashed potatoes. Recommended portion size – 100–200 ml per meal or ½ cup to 1 cup (4–6 oz). Meals should take 20–30 minutes.

✅ STAGE 3 – SEMI-SOLID DIET (approx. weeks 4–6 post op)
Textures become slightly thicker and softer. Portion size: 150–200 g per meal or ¾ cup (6–7 tablespoons). Aim to have 3 small meals + 1–2 protein-based snacks.

✅ STAGE 4 – SOLID FOODS (~1.5-2 months after your bariatric surgery)
You can now gradually return to normal solid foods, just small portions – ½ to 1 cup of food per meal (120–240 ml or g total volume) or you can think also of a “side plate” amount or “palm-sized” portion. From ~6 months post operation and later on aim having a portion size of 1 cup / 200–250 g per meal.

Please read more detailed about each stage on Weight Loss Latvia website - link in comments!

✨✨✨PATIENT REVIEW ✨✨✨ ❤️
"Just a little update, I’m definitely a slow loser , but today I took this picture and I am so shocked at how much progress I’ve made. The hardest part is that I barely took any pictures because when I look in the mirror don’t see any difference , but today I just compared my pictures, and I am shocked . From 123 kg to 79 kg today, I am 44 kg lighter , 9 months post op. and still losing an average of 4-5 kg per month, which is better to avoid gall bladder attacks. My skin is so much clearer , and my face less puffy. I sleep better at night and my blood results came out good . I have been prioritising only real foods , and no processed stuff. Especially in terms of my protein intake. No whey powders or processed proteins, just pure animal meat and vegetables, and doing strength exercises only. The only cardio I do is walking and swimming. I can finally fit in a medium top, and shop in regular stores which is something I haven’t done since I was 15 years old. My taste buds have changed so much, that I find myself craving fruits and vegetables , and real foods instead of chocolates and biscuits😅, which is something shocking because I never used to even eat fruits, now I have two fruits a day as snacks .
Some days are harder where I have no energy, but most days I’m doing great, and I’m so grateful to you and your great support , otherwise I would have never had this life changing surgery 🥹🫶🏾🫶🏾."

Weight Loss Latvia

Weight Loss Latvia is a bariatric surgery service provider in Latvia. We help people fighting obesity to finally obtain longterm success results in their weight loss journeys. With bariatric surgery in average people loose 70-85% of their excess weight during a year or two. These life changing goals are achieved by having gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy surgery performed by certified and skilled bariatric surgeons Dr Olegs Kozlovskis and Dr Juris Žarinovs at Sigulda Hospital in Latvia and, of course, a person's longterm commitment and effort.

Patient story. Lauren, her initial weight was 98 kg, BMI 36.4 and she suffered from joint disease. She was on strong medications and realised she has to do something to improve her condition. She underwent the gastric bypass surgery in 2011. Today, 2020, her weight is still 63 kg, overall health condition is improved, she is off the medications and she says that this was the best decision, she ever made for herself.

Patient story 2. Paul, initial weight 145 kg, BMI 44.7. Pain in knees, pre-diabetic condition. Was eating everything, too big portions and irregularly. The excess weight was a problem at his work. He had a gastric bypass surgery on 2012. During a 1.5 years post-op Paul went down to 82 kg, solved his health issues and had much more energy for work. Today, 2020, he has put on a little of weight back to 90 kg which is comfortable for him.
