💚 Gallstones After Rapid Weight Loss

After bariatric (weight loss) surgery, some patients may develop gallstones in the gallbladder.
While this may sound worrying and symptoms when they appear are not from the nicest, it’s actually a well-known and manageable side effect of rapid weight loss.

❓Why Do Gallstones Form After Weight Loss Surgery?

🔹 When you lose weight quickly - especially within the first 6–12 months after weight loss surgery - your liver releases extra cholesterol into the bile.
🔹 Also - your gallbladder may empty less frequently because you’re eating smaller meals.
🔹 This combination can cause cholesterol in bile to crystallise and form gallstones.

❓How Common Is It?

🟢 According to studies Gallstones can develop in up to 30–50% of patients after bariatric surgery.
🟢 However, only a small number of them experience actual symptoms such as:
- Pain under the right ribs or upper abdomen
- Nausea, vomiting
- Discomfort after fatty meals
