Over time, people start to notice that they need reading glasses. They go to an eye doctor, get their vision tested, order reading glasses, and can read perfectly with them. But when they try to read something on a computer screen that's a bit farther away—say, about 1 to 1.5 meters away—their reading glasses don’t seem to work as well. Frustrated, many people blame either the doctor who examined their eyes or the optician who made the glasses. However, neither the doctor nor the optician is at fault.
The issue is that a single pair of reading glasses typically doesn’t work for both close-up reading (like a book) and mid-range tasks (like a computer screen at a distance). To see clearly at both distances, special lenses are needed. These lenses allow for comfortable reading at both close-up and intermediate distances, such as where a computer monitor might be.
When you visit your eye doctor or optometrist, it’s essential to explain in detail what you need the glasses for: whether you’ll be reading only close-up text or also looking at screens or other materials that are slightly farther away. Different distances require different lens strengths.
Lenses designed to work at both close-up and intermediate distances are often referred to as "office lenses." These lenses are more affordable than fully progressive lenses but offer the convenience of clear vision at both distances. Additionally, you can ask your optician to apply a UV-protection coating or a special filter to reduce glare from artificial light. This can make your vision clearer and more comfortable, especially when working in front of a screen.
