تأسس الأولمبياد الخاص الليبي خلال شهر ابريل- 1998 وهو عضو بالأولمبياد الخاص الدولي لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا من ضمن عشرون دولة تهتم بالبرامج الرياضية للمعاقين ذهنياً وهو عضو بالأولمبياد الدولي ويضم في عضويته مائة وسبعون دولة من جميع دول العالم ولقد نظم الأولمبياد الخاص الليبي العديد من البطولات والملتقيات المحلية على مستوى ليبيا وكذلك شارك في العديد من البطولات الإقليمية والعالمية وكانت له
نتائج مشرفة حيث تحصل الرياضيين الليبين على العديد من القلائد الذهبية والفضية والبرونزية وكانوا مبعث فخر واعتزاز وذلك بشهادة العديد من المهتمين برياضات ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة. إن الأعضاء المؤسسين والمنتسبين لهذا الأولمبياد الخاص الليبي وبتشجيع من الرئيس الشرفي والأخ رئيس الأولمبياد الخاص قد أخذوا على عاتقهم النهوض والرقي بالأولمبياد والوصول بالرياضيين المنخرطين إلى أعلى المستويات وتحقيق أفضل النتائج والمشاركة في اكبر قدر من الألعاب التي ينظمها الأولمبياد الخاص الدولي سواء علي المستوى الإقليمي أو العالمي. Libyan special Olympics was founded in April 1998 and it’s a member of the international special Olympics for the Middle East and North Africa and it’s one of the twenty countries interested in mental disabled sports programs and it’s a member of international Olympic with a membership of one hundred and seventy countries around the world . Libyan special Olympics organized many tournaments, local events, tournaments and camps in Libya, and participated in many regional and international championships and got very good results. they were a matter of pride and this was testimony from people interested in sport of people with special needs. The founders and members of Libyan special Olympics, and by the encouragement of the honorary president, insisted to obtain the highest level and best results and to participated in the largest amount of games organized by the international special Olympics at both the regional and international levels. Libyan special Olympics participated in:
* The summer Special Olympics games in North Carolina, America - 1999, and got many golden and silver medals in swimming.
* Arab championship in Lebanon 2002 and got many golden and silver medals.
* Ireland in 2003 and got golden medals in football.
* regional games in Tunisia, and got 18 golden, silver and bronze medals.
* regional games in Dubai in 2006, and got many golden, silver and bronze medals .
* special Olympics in shanghai in 2007, and got 19 golden, silver and bronze medals.
* The regional games in Abu. Dhabi in 2008, and got 55 golden, silver and bronze medals
* special Olympic world winter games 2009 in Idaho and gained 3 gold and 2 silver medals
