Cardiorespiratory Fitness (CRF): A Powerful Ally Against Cancer
A state-of-the-art review published in Geroscience (June 2024) highlights the strong link between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and reduced cancer risk. Setor K. Kunutsor and colleagues analyzed data showing that higher CRF levels (≥7 METs) are significantly associated with lower risks of multiple cancers, including:
🔹 Head and neck cancers
🔹 Lung cancer
🔹 Breast cancer
🔹 Gastrointestinal cancers (pancreatic, colorectal, etc.)
🔹 Bladder cancer
🔹 Overall cancer incidence and mortality
The proposed mechanisms? Lower inflammation, enhanced immune response, hormonal regulation, and metabolic improvements.
This study reinforces the crucial role of regular physical activity in improving CRF, offering an accessible strategy to reduce cancer risk and enhance long-term health.
Should CRF assessment become a routine part of cancer prevention strategies?
