Renal cortical necrosis
This unusual condition occurs more frequently in children than in adults. It occurs due to severe hypotension or hypoxia which is usually secondary to dehydration, sepsis, blood loss, hypoxia, hemoglobinopathy or the hemolytic/uremic syndrome. In the acute stage the kidney is normal in size or enlarged. There is a subcapsular rim of reduced echogenicity (hypoechoic rim). In subacute and longstanding cases this area of cortex becomes echogenic and may calcify. Secondary medullary fibrosis may also occur.
