The first floor of the guards house was finished in the beginning of January 2024. We have added a temporary roof so it can be used during the planting for shelter when it starts raining and to prevent damage to the structure during the rain season. After the rain and cyclone seasons we will continue with the construction of the 2nd floor.
The 50.000 seedlings that have been planted for Planeterra Foundation in the beginning of 2022 are growing well, some are already over a meter tall, there where the soil conditions are good. In less favorable soil conditions the seedlings are still small, sometimes only around 10 cms tall but they have all but very few survived the dry season.
Even when you think a seedling has died, often only the stem and leaves have dried up but the roots are still alive. With the rain falling, a new stem with leaves will start to grow. In the coming months they will grow further to eventually create a forest with a mixture of trees which will offer shelter and food to wildlife. The plastic sheath you can see on the photo is made from cassave and is biodegradable, you can already see it falling apart!
