🦁🎉 Lion dances bring energy, colour, and excitement to Lunar New Year celebrations.
The drums, cymbals, and gongs are meant to awaken good fortune and chase away bad luck — a tradition that dates back centuries in Chinese culture.
Historically, lion dances were performed to usher in prosperity and protect communities during the new year (National Heritage Board Singapore; Britannica).
That said, it’s good to be aware of the sound levels too.
Lion dance percussion can reach 100–120 decibels, similar to live concerts or construction noise. At these levels, prolonged close exposure can strain the ears (CDC; WHO).
A few simple tips to enjoy the festivities comfortably:
• Keep some distance from the drums when possible
• Limit close exposure to short periods
• Step away briefly if your ears feel overwhelmed
Celebrate fully — just mindfully.
After all, the best memories are the ones you can enjoy comfortably, year after year. 🧧✨
