Kangen is a Japanese word meaning "a return to origin." This has a double meaning. One being that the water is returned to the original state of pure, healthy water as it was back when the earth was new. Second that the body returns to the way it was before being heavy laden with stress and toxins.
Kangen water is Ionized Alkaline water that is made by running regular tap water through an ionizer machine. The water that comes out of the ionizer has a negative charge (antioxidants), has smaller micro-clusters of water molecules to be more easily absorbed by the body and is naturally alkaline (nothing is added to the water).

Back in the 1950's, research was conducted on water that held legendary status as "miracle" or "healing" water. These waters were and are located in Lourdes, France; Tlacote, Mexico; Nordenau, Germany; and Delhi, India.
It was discovered that the water from these four places on the globe had one thing in common... an abundance of Active-Hydrogen, which today is known as Alkaline Water. People who live in these areas live longer, healthier lives. For example, the Hunza people in Tlacote routinely live to 120-140 years with very little disease, almost no cancer, dental issues or bone decay. They are able to bear children into old age and are very strong people. This water is located on a rancher's land who keeps track of all the visitors that come for the water and he sees anywhere from 5000 to 10,000 people a day coming from around the world to drink this "healing" water.
In Lourdes, France over 40,000 people from all over the world come because the water has an abundance of active hydrogen in it. This is what makes the water so rich in antioxidants. Kangen Water is 10x stronger than this water in France.

Japan refined the ionizer machines originally created by the Russians in order to make Kangen water. The first commercial alkaline water ionizers were made in 1958. They were first used in the hospitals in Japan for treating patients and were acknowledged as a legitimate medical device for improving human health by the Health and Rehabilitation Ministry of the Japanese Government in 1966.
Enagic created in-home units to meet the demand for this water. Enagic's Kangen Water ionizers are the only certified medical devices by the Japanese Ministry of Health. The ionizers came to the United States in 2003 and to Canada in 2006.
How do the ionizers work you might ask? Let me do my best to explain. You attach the ionizer machine that sits on your counter to your kitchen faucet through a hose and adapter. The water is then redirected through the ionizer and is first filtered through activated charcoal. Then the filtered water goes through an electrolysis chamber that has platinum-coated titanium electrodes and that is where the electrolysis takes place.

Anions, negatively charged ions, gather at the positive electrode to make anodic water (oxidized water). We are hearing more and more about the importance of drinking alkaline water. You can buy bottles of alkaline water at the grocery store now. We add lemons to our water to make it more alkaline. But why?
The pH (potential of hydrogen) scale goes from 1 (H+ charge), which is acidic, to 14 (OH- charge), which is alkaline. When we are born we are slightly alkaline but we are seeing nowadays that most people are acidic in their adults lives.

On the Enagic ionizer you can choose to drink water with a pH of 8.5, 9.0 or 9.5. Nothing is added to the water to make it alkaline which is often the case with the alkaline water you buy at the store. Alkaline water that has had things added to it to make it alkaline is not safe for consuming long term.
Kangen water is naturally alkaline through the electrolysis process. The H+ and OH- ions are broken apart and most of the H+ goes out the ionizer and down the drain while the OH- ions go through the hose that the drinking water comes out of.
By drinking Kangen ionized alkaline water you can gently raise the pH of your body to a slightly alkaline state. Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for his research in cancer issues and he said that, "disease can not survive in an alkaline environment."

It is all over the place: Antioxidants! Companies are proclaiming their products are high in antioxidants and Dr. Oz is telling us we need more and more of these things. We also know free radicals are bad and scary. But do you really understand what all this is about?
When you cut an apple in half it begins to turn brown. It is dying, aging and breaking down. This is one way of understanding oxidation. Our bodies are oxidizing all the time and we need antioxidants to slow down this process.
Oxidation is a process where oxygen reacts with another substance that results in the loss of an electron. That molecule that lost the electron is unstable and needs to stabilize itself so it goes looking for an electron. This electron hungry molecule is a free radical. Free radicals show no mercy and bind to healthy tissues in our bodies to stabilize themselves, which causes cellular damage. Cellular damage shows itself as wrinkles, disease, degeneration of bones, muscles, organs and low energy. Yuck! Free radicals ARE bad and scary.
Antioxidants, those wonderful little whipper snappers, are substances that have extra electrons. Hooray! The free radicals that are running around looking for an electron are stabilized when they come into contact with an antioxidant because they can take that extra electron instead of robbing it from your body.
We can actually measure the antioxidants in a substance with an Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) monitor. When something has a positive (+) ORP it is oxidizing - it ages us. When something has a negative (-) ORP it is anti oxidizing - it has lots of free electrons to neutralize free radicals. Unfortunately most of what we are drinking and eating has a positive ORP. Tap water can be up towards +550 and most bottled water is even higher. That means the water we are drinking is actually aging us. How discouraging is that when we all know that drinking water is good for us. Things like vitamin C have a negative ORP around -50, green tea is about -100 and cod liver oil is about -200. Kangen water straight out of the ionizer can reach up and over -800 ORP.

Regular tap and bottled water consist of H2O clusters. Those clusters have about 15-20 Molecules which limits absorption. Our bodies absorb about 15% of the water we drink. Through the ionization process that occurs in the water ionizer those clusters are broken down into smaller clusters of about 5-6 molecules making the water more absorbable by our bodies. We can absorb about 90% of Kangen water. The water is able to easily pass in and out of our cells, carrying nutrients and pushing out toxins.
