Yesterday, we held our first Workshop for HR Managers: Managing People with Diverse Needs at Work.

The session brought together HR professionals from different work sectors. The workshop focused on practical approaches to supporting and managing employees with diverse needs in the workplace. The session held a number of discussions and scenario-based learning on how inclusive practices can be effectively applied in real working environments. The workshop was presented by Carnegie Coaching and Consulting.

A main highlight of the workshop was the contribution from our Disability Equality Training team members Christine Mifsud and Blaine Schembri, who shared personal insights from their lived experiences. They spoke about how, when the right accessibility measures and workplace supports are in place, persons with disability are able to work efficiently and independently. Their message reinforced an important point: accessibility is not an add-on, but an essential element of inclusive employment, which goes hand in hand with effective communication and support.

We would like to thank all participants for their engagement and thoughtful contributions throughout the session. The discussions reflected a strong commitment from HR professionals to strengthening inclusion in the workplace.

Stay tuned for more information about future workshop sessions.

Illum huwa l-Jum Ewropew għall-Ħajja Indipendenti. Skont il-European Network for Independent Living (ENIL), "li wieħed jgħix b’mod indipendenti ma jfissirx li jkun indipendenti minn persuni oħra, iżda li jkollu l-libertà tal-għażla, il-kontroll fuq ħajtu u fuq kif jixtieq jgħix."

Staqsejna lil Chris Camilleri (President) u lil Lourdes Camilleri (Viċi President) tal-Kumitat Konsultattiv ta' Nies b'Diżabilità Intellettwali tas-CRPD.

“Xi tfisser li tgħix ħajja indipendenti?”

Today is European Independent Living Day. In the words of the European Network for Independent Living (ENIL), "independent living does not mean being independent from other persons but having the freedom of choice and control over one’s own life and lifestyle."

We asked Jacob Callus, Chairperson of The Young People Disability Rights Forum (YPDRF):

“What does it mean for you to live an independent life, and what holds you back from doing this?”

His words are featured in this post.

Today marks The International Guide Dog Day, and we spoke to Newsbook Malta about the challenges some assistance dog users still face when accessing public spaces.

The Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) has received more than 20 formal complaints over the past two years regarding assistance dog users being refused access to public spaces, highlighting a persistent barrier to independence for the disabled community.

29/04/2026

Our Commissioner Rhoda Garland, speaking with the Service Dogs Malta Foundation, emphasised that assistance dogs on duty have the right to access all areas of society and cannot be refused entry anywhere.

This applies to restaurants, taxis, hospitals, beaches, and any other space. Denying access to a service dog is not permissible.

Final post in our ❌Myths vs Facts ✅ Assistance Dogs short series.

Another frequent myth is about public access rights for assistance dogs.
In fact, these working dogs are legally permitted in all public spaces in Malta to ensure their handlers are supported and safe.

Thanks for following along.

❌ Myths vs Facts ✅ Assistance Dogs

Part of our short series.

A common misconception is that it’s okay to interact with assistance dogs while they’re working.

In reality, these dogs are on duty and distractions can create serious risks for persons with disabilities who rely on them.
