Omnicare Coop is the first registered Social Cooperative in Malta, founded by workers for workers. Omnicare’s foundation principle was to contribute in solving the precarious jobs situation that developed over the past years effecting directly Governmental and private, health care institutions. Omnicare believes in proper care service dedicated to cater for all an individual needs whilst focusing
on the European Union’s Health & Safety Standards. Striving to maintain and deliver the highest standards of services to clients, we believe that this is only achievable through training and betterment of the cooperative’s members and staff. We capitalize on improving our members’ work status with a variety of aids including academic opportunities, in-house training courses and activities that are aimed at allowing accurate service delivery. In addition, the collective objective of Omnicare is to offer all its worker-members good working conditions, better wages and the possibility of secure employment throughout their life. As a workers’ cooperative, Omnicare is not owned by outside shareholders or a small group of founders or partners, but by all the employees in equal portions. Top level management and entry level employees alike own an identical share and receive an equal portion of any profits and losses. As a cooperative, Omnicare aims to inspire workers to work cooperatively and improve our society for the better, here and now. As a Social Workers’ cooperative Omnicare is run as a business, democratically, by the same workers who are also stakeholders in the Cooperative. This concept motivates workers, provides meaningful employment and service to the community. Working for Omnicare means that making money is not the bottom line. We can integrate our political ethics into coop decisions and channel any profits into our environment and communities. Taking control of our lives is the first step in the fight against the massive injustices and precarious working conditions that we are facing. As a workers’ cooperative, Omnicare is an alternative for profit structure based upon standard democratic principles. It is not designed to maximize profits, nor returns to investors, but rather to bring to the workplace many of the rights and responsibilities that we hold as citizens in our communities. equality between members

Cooperatives such as Omnicare give a chance to change a small but significant part of how things are. Cooperatives are one way to take back an important part of our lives and gain control over how we work, not to mention the impact our work has on others and our environment.
