Jessica is a registered speech and language pathologist with the council of professions complementary to medicine (CPCM). She has been working with the Ministry for Health since 2015 and gained experience in working with both geriatric and paediatric populations. Following four years of working in the field of dysphagia in a local long term care facility, Jessica has now embarked on a full-time role serving a mainly paediatric caseload within the community. Jessica is very passionate about Autism and has successfully completed a Special Education Masters’ Degree in the subject with the University of Birmingham. Within the area of autism, she is particularly keen on reading about women and girls with autism as well as on disclosure of the diagnosis of autism to parents and children. Inclusive education for this population is another favourite topic.
Jessica has experience in running several pediatric therapy groups targeting language development and social skills. She enjoys delivering workshops to parents and professionals in order to pass on knowledge and skills in the best interest of the clients under her care. In April 2019 Jessica was chosen to present her local research ‘Evaluating the readiness of Maltese Speech and Language Pathologists in identifying the subtle clinical presentation of autism in females on the spectrum’, at the conference on Neurodevelopmental Disorders hosted by The Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH).
Furthermore, Jessica has been a member of the Association of Speech and Language Pathologists (ASLP) since January 2015 and has recently joined the ASLP committee in the position of assistant treasurer. Jessica is also a member of the sub-committee within ASLP, entrusted to work on a new assistive and augmentative communication application in Maltese, KomunikApp. Stemming from a desire to understand and assist better individuals with autism in a holistic manner, she has accomplished training in Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to feeding, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2), Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme and Maltese Sign Language. Future endeavours include learning Braille and Interactive Story-Telling.
When not reading, Jessica enjoys strolls by the sea or in the countryside, baking, gardening and meditating.
