Morning,
Funeral vs Celebration of Life.
I have been following the recent terminology used by our colleagues in Malta in the Funeral Industry.
Lately a lot of Funeral Directors are using the term "Celebration of Life" instead of a "Funeral".
Unfortunately this is a totally wrong concept and wrong term to use since as one can read below there is a huge difference.
The basic difference is that during a Funeral there is a Coffin with a physical person involved, whereas a Celebration of Life take place after the funeral is done.
Hope this clears the difference and lets start again to use the proper words during Funerals and last good-byes
More Information:
A traditional funeral is a structured, often religious, event focusing on mourning and saying goodbye, usually occurring shortly after death with the body present.
A celebration of life is a more informal, flexible, and uplifting event held to honor the deceased's personality and joy, often featuring music, stories, and vibrant, personalized themes without the body present.
Key Differences:
Tone: Funerals are solemn, while celebrations of life are joyful or reflective.
Timing: Funerals occur shortly after death; celebrations can happen weeks or months later.
Focus: Funerals focus on the death/burial, whereas celebrations of life focus on the life lived.
Structure: Funerals follow strict rituals; celebrations are highly customizable, often featuring hobbies or favorite places of the deceased.
Body Presence: Funerals usually involve a casket or urn; celebrations of life often occur after burial or cremation.
Ultimately, the choice depends on whether a traditional, reverent, or a more personal, celebratory atmosphere best honors the deceased.
