Stimming

We often hear some one say 'his stimming'.

What does this mean ?

Stimming is also referred as 'self- stimulatory behaviour'.

It is a repetitive behaviour such as sounds, physical movements, moving objects, or other behaviours which help calm down the brain.

Some children may outgrow stimming as they grow older and develop coping skills and social skills too.

Stimming can occur in children without autism too.

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I will remember, involve me and I will learn"

Doing daily things with your children helps them develop their language skills as well as their daily life skills.

Patience is key ❤️

How many times do we see this happening in our own homes ?

Children are having much less interaction now a days cause parents are spending hours on a daily basis on their phones.

Summer is the perfect time to boost your child's communication skills in fun and relaxed ways 🌞 🌊 🪣 🏰

Talk about what you see - shells, waves, umbrellas, fish 🐟

Give instructions - Pour water in the bucket ! Fill the bucket with sand etc

Play turn taking games - "My turn to dig, now your turn"

Take lots of pictures so that you can speak about them later when you arrive home. A great way of working on sentences later on.

Consistency matters, even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

Speech therapy doesn't stop at the clinic - it continues at home, in the car, at the park, and during house chores and bedtime stories.

Heuristic Play ( Ages 1 year to 2 and half years)

Put away all the toys and bring out a basket with every day objects in it ( some of which we end up throwing away)

So much vocabulary can be used here 😊

Fill it up with wooden spoons, containers, coloured pom poms, curtain rings, pine cones, pebbles, empty kitchen/toilet rolls, ribbons, strings, yarns, wooden pegs, keys , empty cotton reels, yarns and pots.

Heuristic Play helps childrens creativity and imagination.

It also stimulates a childs critical thinking and and brain development.

I suggest a child is given the opportunity of heuristic play at least 30 mins a day.

I feel it can be done up to an older age too. My 7 year old still loves it till today :) .

Bring on the sensory play , vocabulary boost and imagination skills 😁

At Speech Therapy Kiddos children are taught language skills through play based activities.

Play is essential during speech therapy as it provides meaningful and motivating contexts to practice language skills.

Challenging behaviour is something that Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) and parents experience quite often during the day for various reasons. Mainly caused because of frustration of being unable to communicate.
