For many years, dentists used silver-coloured fillings (amalgam fillings). They were strong and long-lasting, but today, we mainly use tooth-coloured (composite) fillings instead.
👉 Why the change?
Appearance: Tooth-coloured fillings blend naturally with your teeth.
Bonding: Composites bond directly to your tooth, helping to preserve more of the natural structure.
Safety & comfort: While silver fillings contain mercury in a stable form, research shows they are safe. Still, many patients prefer mercury-free options, and new materials give us excellent alternatives.
Technology: Modern composites are strong enough to handle daily chewing forces while looking completely natural.
✨ In short: silver fillings aren’t dangerous in your mouth, but white fillings give you a healthier, more natural-looking smile, which is why they’re now the standard of care.
If you have older silver fillings and wonder whether you should replace them, the best step is to let us check during your routine visit. Sometimes they last for decades without issues, and sometimes replacing them improves strength and aesthetics.
