PHYSICAL THERAPY INTENSIVE Walk This Way Malta

We are excited to share we have last minute openings for intensives in October, November and December!

Bookings are also being taken for 2024!

Intensives capitalize on the neuroplasticity of a young child’s brain and allow additional time to focus on existing therapy goals and create new challenges

But… what is neuroplasticity? And why is it so important?

In the easiest of definitions, the brain is able to grow and adapt to positive motor input and create new pathways for information to travel. By repeating a specific skilled exercise over and over again with your child, as we do during an intensive, we are teaching the brain how it is supposed to work and telling it to create a pathway to do it on its own! This leads to progress in areas of concern as well as aids the child to master desired skills and movements.

Get in touch with us for more information 🙂

Is strength training recommended for children with hypertonic musculature?

Let’s have a look at some of the literature available and see what it has to say 😃

1. Damiano & Abel,1999: this study showed that children with spastic CP provided with a strengthening program, demonstrated improved strength without increased tone

2. Dodd and colleagues (2002): In a review of 10 empirical studies found enough evidence to establish strength-training programs (with free weights, isometric, isokinetic, concentric and eccentric exercises) improve muscle strength in spastic and non-spastic muscle groups in children and young adults with CP, with no increase in spasticity.

3. Stackhouse et al. (2007): demonstrated in their study that spastic muscles are weak muscles and will benefit from strengthening

4. Novak et al. (2019): this systemic review of interventions published in Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports gives modalities such as Strength Training and Treadmill training the “green light” and disputes the longstanding belief that strengthening muscles impaired by CNS dysfunction would increase spasticity

The image attached to this post outlines the methods currently being used in the treatment of children with CP and categorizes them into:

DO IT
PROBABLY DO IT
WORTH IT LINE
PROBABLY DONT DO IT
DON’T DO IT

I highly suggest that everyone has a look at this article:
