Laura originally came from a health and fitness background, gaining her first certificate in teaching exercise to music in 1990. She continued her studies within the fitness industry for several years before she decided to look deeper into injury prevention and enrolled in the physiotherapy course at the University of Malta, graduating with a BSc (Hons) in 2000. Her under- graduate dissertation was a practical study looking at the effects of stabilising exercises versus manual therapy on chronic back pain. After graduating she was keen to carry on developing her knowledge and went on to take up post-graduate studies in Modified Pilates for Physiotherapists. She has since organized many courses for physiotherapists in Malta, which have included APPI Pilates courses, which she conducts in Malta for the Institute.
Laura is a musculoskeletal therapist with a special interest in back pain. She was asked to conduct research at St Luke’s hospital with the aim of providing best-care practice for patients with back pain and went on to co-ordinate the setting up of the back-care unit at the hospital. Laura teaches modified Pilates classes for all levels at Hilltop Gardens in Naxxar. She has written several articles promoting physiotherapy and Pilates, especially in relation to back pain and preventing injuries. Laura conducts seminars and workshops on ergonomics and prevention strategies to prevent pain developing in the workplace. She has presented her research at the AMON International conference held in Malta and at the APPI conference at the Royal College of Surgeons in Regent’s Park (London). Laura also gained her MSc in Sports Physiotherapy at the University of Bath in 2015. Her research project was related to the relationship between pain and muscle imbalance in running and the effects of standing Pilates in rehabilitation for runners with knee pain. Recently she has been planning for the year ahead and will be introducing courses for post-op spine, scoliosis, post-op breast patients, Performance Pilates for runners and children courses. there will also be a Comprehensive Course for exercise teachers to become internationally certified Pilates teachers.
