Have you noticed more mosquitoes buzzing around lately? You’re not imagining it, 2025 has been a big year for Malta’s mosquitoes.
The usual suspect, Culex pipiens (the common house mosquito), is still the most abundant species trapped by The Exterminator, with thousands caught across the islands this year. While it’s widespread, no major disease outbreak has been linked to it locally, yet it’s definitely annoying!
Then there’s Culiseta longiareolata, which thrives in both natural and artificial habitats, including saltpans and coastal pools. Mostly a nuisance for birds, this species can be spotted in lots of unexpected places.
The real troublemaker? Aedes albopictus, the “Asian tiger mosquito.” First spotted in Malta in 2009, this invasive species has exploded in numbers and brings the potential to carry viruses like dengue and chikungunya. Since it’s new here, Malta is not adapted for it, and it’s by far the hardest to deal with.
You can help keep populations down: empty standing water from containers, plant saucers, roof gutters, and buckets; cover cisterns and wells; maintain swimming pools; and drain blocked puddles. The Exterminator also told Lovin Malta the company monitors with traps, uses larvicides, and provides professional support where needed.
