A sad say for our country.

Breaking news:

What should have never happened, happened today: a Maltese woman was brought to court facing charges of having a medical abortion at home.

Women’s Rights Foundation’s legal team assisted her throughout the ordeal and she was let off with conditional discharge.

We are informed that throughout the investigation and the entire proceedings she was treated with the dignity and respect that she deserves by the police and our justice system. Whilst we appreciate that, it does not change the fact that this should have never, ever happened in the first place.

Access to safe abortion is recognised worldwide as a basic part of women’s healthcare and a basic human right. That women are prosecuted for it locally should put us all to shame.

Press release to follow.

We do the same, in Malta we provide non-judgemental service to everyone who needs help and assistance when pregnant..and we’ll continue to do so.

“When I get home, I will have the same life, the same phone, the same Abortion Without Borders helpline. And I will answer calls, send emails. Nothing will change.” - Justyna.

The case has been closely watched in the U.S., where lawsuits against people who helped with medicated abortions are beginning to emerge in states that have tightened abortion restrictions since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Women in Malta face hurdles and barriers to healthcare, just because they are women. We exist to help women who are neglected by the state, women in difficult situations, and women who are unable to access the care they need. Happy international women's day everyone!

We would like to take this moment to thank all the volunteers at FPAS Malta: Pro-Choice Helpline and Advisory Service. When Andrea and Jay were in hospital, Jay contacted FPAS for help. He was then given advice on what needs to be done, signposted to pro-choice lawyers and doctors, and things got into motion. Evacuation was planned, and Andrea has now left the island. She will soon receive the care she needs.

This but one of the many things the amazing FPAS volunteers do. It is rare to have high profile cases like Andrea's, but the other people who contact FPAS are in a similar situation. They are terrified, lost, and made vulnerable by our lack of sexual and reproductive health services. FPAS openly discusses their options, and refers them to those who can help. FPAS does this on a daily basis, and by its second anniversary more than 1,200 people in Malta will have contacted FPAS for help.

Thank you.

We dedicate this year’s International Women’s Day to all those women who, since August of 2020, contacted our FPAS Malta: Pro-Choice Helpline and Advisory Service, seeking information and help on abortion and their reproductive health.

Therefore we are launching a mini-campaign in order to raise awareness about the difficulties women in Malta encounter and hardship our abortion laws create for them.

Our message to women in Malta is simple – the state might abandon you, we will not.

Please watch the first in a series of videos we will be releasing over coming weeks.

We thank Dear Decision Makers for providing us with testimonies.

FPAS is a free service, a collaboration between Women'sRights Foundation, Doctors for Choice Malta and Women for Women, dedicated to providing reliable information on abortion, contraception, and other matters related to sexual and reproductive health.

We have our second batch of candidates who OPPOSE women's rights and equality in our country. It is honestly upsetting to see candidates trying to boost their electoral chances by pandering to a group that is known for pushing hateful propaganda against minorities, including LGBTI people. People who care about civil rights should NOT vote for them.

🇲🇹Daħlu t-tieni sett ta' kandidati li JOPPONU d-drittijiet tan-nisa u l-ugwaljanza f'pajjiżna. Hija onestament xokkanti kif kandidati jaħsbu li għandhom jintogħġbu billi jirreklamaw ruħhom fi grupp li jmexxi propaganda kontra l-minoranzi, inkluż persuni LGBTI. Dawk kollha li jimpurthom mid-drittijiet ċivili għandhom MA JIVVUTAWLHOMX.

During this electoral campaign we will be naming the OPPONENTS of women's rights and equality, so that those who care about these civil rights can NOT vote for them.

🇲🇹Waqt din il-kampanja elettorali, ser inkunu qegħdin insemmu lil dawk li JOPPONU d-drittijiet tan-nisa u l-ugwaljanza f'pajjiżna, sabiex dawk li jimpurthom minn dawn id-drittijiet ċivili MA JIVVUTAWLHOMX.

In its first year of operations, our pro-choice helpline has helped at least 479 people in Malta get the care they need. Most queries were about abortion, followed by contraception and morning after pills.

Today is our first anniversary! On 1st August 2020 we launched our service to fill a void in Malta. We believe every women, girl, and other person should have access to reliable information to make their own choices. Information on reproductive choices has been severely lacking in our country, and we sought to change that.

Since our launch we have helped over 400 clients by giving information and advice so they can get the care they need. (More on this later).

Our website has also been visited by thousands of people from Malta for information.

This is only the beginning. We will remain here and keep bolstering our services until the Maltese state finally decides to provide the services and reproductive options people in Malta need.
