Exclusive breastfeeding rate till 6months in Mauritius is only around 20% where it should be at least 50%.

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended till 6months and the current rate in Mauritius is around 20% only! The target to achieve by 2025 is at 50% and by 2030 to be at least 70% as per WHO.
We are really far behind mummies!

While breastfeeding may not seem the right choice for every parent, it is the best choice for every baby. It is new to you and it is new to your baby. Both of you are on this learning journey together!

A little reminder about honey and baby under one year old!

Babies younger than 1 year old should not be given honey. That's because a type of bacteria (called Clostridium) that causes infant botulism can be found in honey. Infant botulism can cause muscle weakness, with signs like poor sucking, a weak cry, constipation, and decreased muscle tone (floppiness).

Catching a cold when it's summer? Why?
This summer we all experience a lot more vomitting and diarrhea that accompany colds. This probably speaks to a dominance of enterovirus, a common summer cold virus that can produce more gastrointestinal symptoms or pink eye symptoms than rhinovirus, which is more dominant in the winter.

We did not see this 'severe summer cold' due to Covid last year with all the precautions that we took. But it is not due to Covid or Covid vaccine that we are experiencing cold with vomitting and diarrhea.

It is mainly due to:
1. The immune system got a little forgetful, not having been exposed to the most current viral strains, and therefore is less prepared to fight them off.

2. You may notice this year is more humid than last year, hence we tend to use more air-conditioning in cars, homes, and at work. Rapid changing hot-to-cold environment affects our body to defend against viruses. Rapid lowering of body temperature will constrict blood vessels and decrease blood flow, therefore more difficult for our white blood cells to fight off viruses in a colder environment.
