Real growth isn't instant. It's messy. Slow. And sometimes invisible. But that doesn't mean it's not happening. If you've already decided that it's 'not working', ask yourself this, is the therapy failing or have you stopped believing in your child's ability to change?

Research has consistently found that trusting the process significantly improves outcomes. Your belief in your child might just be the most healing tool of all. Please don't take that away.

Music's a beautiful way in which children can express themselves non verbally. It can have a calming and grounding effect and helps build connection between those creating music together. It's been found to be especially helpful with those who struggle with language or who have experienced trauma.

How about this year's resolution as parents be to be more self compassionate? Rather than constantly feelling guilty over not doing enough, over forgetting the last school bring amd share or worrying that you should have shielded your child better; be kind to yourself. This will lead to more confident parenting and in turn have a positive influence on your child development.

Different toys. Different set ups. Even different countries. But what has remained non negotiable is the therapeutic relationship, factor which has been strongly linled to the success of therapy.

Through play therapy and the therapeutic alliance that gets formed between a child and his therapist, the child finds a safe space to express himself and discovers coping strategies to handle tough emotions.

Children of separated parents are more likely to experience low levels of well being as well as being at a higher risk of adjustment problems and disruptive behaviours. This is especially true if the child is witness to the conflictual relationship between the separated parents.
It's important for the parents to show a united front and if possible, together explain to the child that the child is in no way responsible for the separation and their love for them will not change. Therapy also enables the child to process these confusing emotions and deal with the loss of a family breakdown.

Learn to recognise the signs that your child may need additional support from a mental health professional. As per the stats, 70% of children who experience mental health issues do not get the help they need. Failing to address the issue early on will impact the person's physical and mental health in adulthood.

When people operate within their window of tolerance, they are able to cope with and manage their emotions effectively. Those who have experienced trauma tend to have a narrower window of tolerance and therefore, they tend to tip over their window over what seem to be minor stressors. This leads to a state of either hyperarousal or hypoarousal.

Understanding what triggers you to be pushed out of your window of tolerance can be helpful to enable you to remain within this window while therapy has been found to help widen the window of tolerance.
