Meaning is often felt before it's understood: children feel things before they can name them.

How about we try to listen to the feeling, not just the behaviour?

Sometimes the wisest parenting reminders come from the simplest stories...

Children don’t always need confidence. Sometimes they just need someone to hold belief for them.

👉 Who is holding that belief for your child?

Sometimes we think we need to do more to raise good, happy children—
correct more, teach more, fix more.
But often, it’s smaller than that.
A quiet moment.
A simple question:
“What was one small good moment today?”
Research shows that gratitude helps children feel happier, regulate emotions, and build stronger relationships.
But they don’t learn it from being told.
They learn it from what we notice.
And it’s so easy to notice the hard parts—
the mess, the defiance, the moments they didn’t listen.
But what if we paused to see what’s also there?
The child who questions you is thinking for themselves.
The child who doesn’t always obey is learning independence.
The loud one… is full of life.
Gratitude isn’t about ignoring the hard.
It’s about not letting it be the only thing we see.
And when children feel seen for what’s good in them,
they begin to see it too.
Maybe it starts there.
Not with them—
with us.

Helping others doesn’t just benefit those in need — it shapes our children too.
The key is letting them experience generosity, not forcing it.

Small moments matter: choosing a toy to donate, putting coins in a giving jar, or helping someone in the community. These moments quietly teach children that their actions can make a difference.
And that feeling — of helping someone else — is often what makes kindness stick.

What's hope to you?

Psychologists define hope as the self belief that you can find a way and you can keep going.

Hopeful children
have been found ro have better academic outcomes,
greater resilience
and lower anxiety.
So, instead of pretending that everything is fine and saying don't worry, help the child believe that there is a way forward and they can take part in finding it. Try saying what could we try next? or what's one next small step?

Remember, hopeful children don't collapse at the first obstacle- they problem solve; they look for another path.

Over the past few days, I explored different types of hugs and how they support children’s emotional development.

The most powerful hug may be the one that comes after the storm. Research on attachment shows that repair builds security- not perfection.

When you hold your child after a hard moment, their brain learns: “Even when I struggle, I am still loved.” This strengthens long-term self-esteem and emotional resilience.

Rocking isn’t just for babies.
Rhythmic movement has been shown to calm the nervous system by activating vestibular pathways linked to regulation.

Holding your child and slowly swaying can: reduce emotional intensity; slow breathing; bring their body back to calm. Bonus point if your child can listen to the steady rhythm of your heartbeat while being rocked.

The sandwich hug combines: deep pressure; shared warmth; playful connection
Multiple sources of affectionate touch can increase oxytocin and strengthen bonding.
This kind of playful containment sends the message: “You are surrounded by safety.”
It’s regulation wrapped in laughter.

There’s something powerful about not letting go too quickly.

Research shows that sustained affectionate touch increases oxytocin — the hormone linked to bonding and safety.
When you hold your child just a little longer, their body begins to shift: breathing slows; muscles soften; stress hormones reduce
A long hug quietly says: “I’m not going anywhere.” For young children especially, time inside your arms builds emotional security in their brain.

According to research, children borrow their self- esteem from parents's self talk. They don't just listen to what we say to them- they listen to what we say about ourselves. And they then internalise this parental self-criticism and body image talk.

Gentle self-talk teaches self-respect.
