"Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement." (WFOT, 2012)

Occupational therapy is the assessment and treatment of physical and psychiatric conditions using specific, purposeful activity to prevent disability and promote independent function in all aspects of daily life. Occupational therapists work in hospital and various community settings. They may visit clients and their carers at home to monitor their progress. When a course of therapy is completed, the therapist will analyse how effective it has been. Occupational therapists work with young children, adolescents, adults and older people. In these areas:

* physical rehabilitation
* mental health services
* learning disability
* primary care
* paediatrics
* environmental adaptation
* care management
* equipment for daily living
* research posts

In these places:

* community centres
* education establishments
* GP practices / primary care
* hospitals
* housing associations
* clients homes
* industrial and commercial organisations
* prisons
* residential and nursing homes
* social services and council departments
* schools
* charities and voluntary agencies

They work with people of all ages to help them overcome the effects of disability caused by physical or psychological illness, ageing or accident. The profession offers enormous opportunities for career development and endless variety. Being a registered occupational therapist takes patience, ingenuity, determination, common sense, a sound knowledge base and enthusiasm. Most of all, it requires an interest in working closely with people to enable them to lead full and satisfying lives as independently as possible.

The vestibular system plays an essential role in the relationship between our body, gravity and the world. It tells our brain whether our body is moving, how fast it is moving and in what direction. The vestibular system provides the foundation for the development of other sensory systems, such as touch, vision, hearing and proprioception. It is crucial for the development of balance, bilateral coordination and motor control of the eye. The vestibular system involves vestibular organs and receptors in the non-auditory (non-hearing) region of the inner ear. The two main components are the semi-circular canals, which detects rotational movements, and the otolith organs, which detect linear movements. Simply, the organs detect movement of fluid in the inner ear, which tells the brain where the head is in space. Contact the OTFC Group now to book an assessment to find out more about how our therapists can support your child’s vestibular processing.

This is a modified traction splint which is being used to provide gentle traction to a PIP joint following an intra-articular base of middle phalanx fracture!

The splint was made to allow some flexion and extension of the PIP joint to minimise stiffness while trying to prevent the fracture from displacing.

Please note, this patient was being seen very regularly by the treating surgeon, and our EKCO Hand Therapist to assess bone alignment, splint comfort, and compliance.
