When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditions, organizations and clubs.

But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike.

This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness.

For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people.

Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface.

Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!!

If you choose, please "copy and paste" (by touching and holding the text) onto your profile in honor of all children who are deemed "different".
Our world would be far less beautiful without them.

Good mental health is an important part of a healthy child's development. It helps children to build positive social, emotional, thinking, and communication skills. It also lays the foundation for better mental health and wellbeing later in life.

Every year on December 3, "International Day of Persons with Disability" is observed to increase public awareness of the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities.

On this day, we are reminded that everyone has the right to be treated with respect and decency and that individuals with disabilities should have access to the same opportunities as everyone else. We also reaffirm our commitment to striving toward a time when everyone, regardless of disability, may fully engage in society.

Let us honor the achievements that people with disabilities have made to the world and to pledge to make our societies more inclusive of all people.

Talking to your kids about body boundaries, as early as possible, can make them less vulnerable to sexual abuse. Learning about safety rules can help them understand what is allowed, what is inappropriate and, empower them to speak up when they feel something is wrong. Some important points include ๐Ÿ‘‡:

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธTeach them to name body parts early (private parts as well).

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธBody boundaries: no one should touch their body (private) parts without their consent, or ask them to touch someone else's. They should know they are allowed to say NO.

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธBody secrets are not okay and, they need to tell their safety network about it. Perpetrators will often ask the child keep the abuse a secret. Children often feel they can get punished if they tell someone about it. They need to be reassured that they will NEVER get in trouble when revealing any form of sexual abuse.

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธNo one should take pictures of their private parts or show them pictures/videos.

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธBody safety rules apply to strangers BUT ALSO to people they know and, even with another child. It can be either a male or a female.
Children tend to make up an image of a villain when we talk about sexual abuse but unfortunately, someone close to them can also be the perpetrator. The line between what is right or wrong can then be more blurry. But they should know that it is still not acceptable. That abuse does not have a specific face, or gender.

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธHave a code word to use when your child does not feel safe around others.

Safety conversations need to be reiterated so that your child understands the message well. It can be done in a natural way, with no pressure, such as during bath time.

What if?

Instead of judging another mom, we give her grace and remember that weโ€™re all doing the best we can.

What if?

Instead of staring at someone who looks or acts differently, we wave and say hello.

What if?

Instead of watching someone struggling, we ask how we can help.

What if?

Instead of complaining about our hardships, we start showing more gratitude for the things and people weโ€™re thankful for.

What if?

Instead of saying โ€œIโ€™m fineโ€, letโ€™s allow ourselves to be vulnerable and accept help from others.

What if?

We learned to love each other regardless of our differences.

What if we take every day as a new day to improve ourselves?

A new day to be a little better than yesterday.

To be kinder.
More honest.
More caring.
More forgiving.

What if we start changing the way things have always been?

What if this is the year we learn from past mistakes and start moving forward with purpose and intent?

What if we supported each other instead of walking away?

What if we focus on building each other up instead of tearing each other down?

What if we started changing the world for the better?

And what if we started today?

Take care of yourself. Itโ€™s the best way to care for others! ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ

The ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—”๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐˜€๐—บ ๐—”๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† observed on each 2nd April of the year. The aim of this day is to make people understand what autism is and most importantly accept children and people with autism.

Autism is present EVERY day. It impacts the person having autism and EVERY one in his family. It never goes away. It is hard, the hardest thing to accept this fact that autism is not curable neither, but it also comes with beauty.

It is all about believing that people suffering from autism are just unique and not less in any other way. They are children and they are also adults. They want exactly what you want. They want to be loved. They want to be accepted. They want to be successful. They need more patience from you. They need more acceptance from you. They need kindness and unconditional love just like you do.

BE NICE! Take the extra time to connect. Teach your kids to be kind. Teach your kids to include everyone especially kids that might seem different. Teach your kids that different is not less. If we teach our kids these skills they will make this world a better place and grow into awesome adults that continue to spread kindness.

Letโ€™s cherish them by ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ to help creating a better world.

๐ŸŒธDown Syndrome Day๐ŸŒธ

Did you know that Down Syndromeโ€”a disorder that occurs when there is a duplication of the twenty-first chromosomeโ€”affects approximately 6,000 babies at birth every year?

So on March 21โ€”a date chosen to represent the chromosomal defection found in Down Syndrome (the twenty-first day of the third month)โ€”celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, an event created to raise public awareness, promote inclusivity, encourage advocacy, and support the wellbeing of those living with Down Syndrome.
