If you are suffering from musculoskeletal pain like Mechanical Back pain, Sciatic pain, shoulder pain, knee pain etc, and you are looking for a remedy other than Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, and Corticosteroid injection, then Glucopuncture may be an alternative treatment option for your problem. Glucopuncture is a therapy which consists of small injections of glucose or dextrose 5% into your skin, muscles, tendons or ligaments, and it has the effect of boosting the repair of the injured cells. Evidence shows that Glucose 5% enhances tissue repair and helps in pain modulation. It has a high safety profile, and it is safe even for diabetic patients.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate the body's natural healing process, to reduce pain and promote healing in bone, tendon, ligament and fascia in patients with musculoskeletal disorders,
• Frozen Shoulder, Tendinopathy, Calcific Tendinitis, Tears /Sprains
• Tennis Elbow, Lateral epicondylitis, Golfer’s Elbow
• Plantar fasciitis, Heel Spur, Achilles tendinopathy
• Knee osteoarthritis , Patellar Tendinopathy , etc

The Radial shockwave sends pulses in 5 to 10 microseconds and can reach a depth 5 centimetres.

Its physiological benefits:
1. It increases blood flow, cell permeability, and hence create a localized inflammatory response so as to initiate a healing process
2. Pain modulation in the peripheral nervous system
3. It stimulates cells like fibroblasts, involved in the reparative healing process.
4. It stimulated the release of growth factors in the injured tissue, which are essential for repair and regeneration.

The most common causes of knee pain are:

1. Osteoarthritis. This is the “wear and tear” type of arthritis that breaks down the cartilage in the knee due to long-term use and excessive body weight. The knee joint aches or swells when you’re active

2. Patellofemoral pain syndrome. Misalignment of the knee, foot, hip and low back, and muscular imbalance of the thigh usually cause this condition. It causes the knee to make clicking sounds, aching, and buckling; you suddenly can’t bear your weight.

3. Patellar tendinitis. Also called “Jumper’s knee” is an inflammation of the patella tendon, occurring most often in those who regularly engage in sports such as Jumping and Running

4. Meniscal tear. Due to an excessive twisting force in the knee while bearing weight, the meniscus can get torn. A torn piece can then get stuck in the joint and cause a locking sensation.

5. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury occurs when there is a direct blow to the knee when it is straight and when the foot is firmly rooted on the ground, or during sudden changes in direction in sports such as soccer or basketball.

Risk factors of knee pain:
1. Engaging in certain sports like basketball, soccer, tennis that involve explosive movements or sudden changes in direction.

2. Certain manual occupations like in construction work that involve physical effort and squatting movement.

3. Being overweight – this puts excessive pressure on the knee cartilages and hence predisposes to osteoarthritis

4. Lack of muscular strength and flexibility

How can these be treated ?
-Chiropractic manipulation
-Shockwave therapy
-Prolotherapy
-Dry Needling
-Rehabilitation exercises

This is the case of H.L Darren, 31 y.o guy, who practices Thai Boxing and Street Fighting. He had been suffering from Mechanical Thoracic pain and Lumbago intermittently for 14 years.

He had been feeling pain when sleeping at night, felt crooked when standing – a sensation of one leg being shorter or longer than the other and the body twisted to one side, morning spine stiffness that lasted for 30 mins, and not being able to practice his favourite sports to his maximum potential.

Doliprane 1000mg or Olfen 100mg and an occasional glass of red wine would give him temporary relief.

So finally after 14 years, he started a course of Chiropractic treatment, which consisted of Dry Needling with electrostimulation, and full spine manipulation.

Great improvements were already noted after the first few sessions, with the patient reporting better quality of sleep, being able to stand up “straighter” and resuming his Martial Art sports in the coming days.

We wish him full recovery the soonest possible,

Octagon Chiropractic
