Imagine fixing a tooth with beeswax! How far we’ve come in dentistry!

Scientists discovered the world's oldest known dental filling in Slovenia (2012). A 6,500-year-old lower jaw (mandible) belonging to a Stone Age man had a beeswax filling in a cracked canine tooth.

This finding suggests that prehistoric humans not only suffered from dental pain but also tried to treat it — possibly for pain relief or tooth protection. The beeswax may have acted like a natural dental sealant.

The study was published in PLoS ONE and involved micro-CT scans and detailed chemical analysis to confirm the presence and purpose of the beeswax.

This discovery gives us a rare glimpse into early dental practices and human attempts at healthcare thousands of years ago.
