AEGLE Cancer Hospital Expands Its Presence in Africa with the Zanzibar Cancer Institute Project
A pioneer in oncology in Mauritius, AEGLE Cancer Hospital (ACH) continues to extend its expertise beyond borders. In October 2025, ACH took a significant step forward by signing an official agreement with the Government of Zanzibar and its Ministry of Health to establish the Zanzibar Cancer Institute โ a 100-bed specialised cancer hospital that reflects the growing recognition of AEGLEโs medical excellence across the African continent.
This strategic partnership stems from a shared goal: to expand access to world-class oncology care across Africa. The Ministry of Health of Zanzibar recognised AEGLEโs proven expertise in the design, financing, and management of specialised hospitals, leading to the formation of a long-term publicโprivate partnership ensuring the projectโs sustainability and impact.
The upcoming institute will offer comprehensive oncology services, including advanced diagnostics (MRI, PET-CT, digital mammography), radiotherapy using linear accelerators, chemotherapy, surgical oncology, palliative care, and capacity-building programmes for local healthcare professionals. The project is expected to become operational within 24 to 30 months, with a phased rollout of services before the official inauguration.
Beyond serving the people of Zanzibar, the Zanzibar Cancer Institute is expected to benefit the wider East African region, enabling patients to access specialised cancer care locally rather than travelling far abroad. It will also serve as a centre of knowledge, integrating training and research to advance oncology expertise across the region.
With this landmark project, following its expansion into several other countries, AEGLE Cancer Hospital reaffirms its ambition to build a pan-African oncology network. Each new centre is designed to integrate seamlessly into this ecosystem, fostering the exchange of expertise, technology, and best practices, and strengthening AEGLEโs commitment to being a leading force in the fight against cancer in Africa and the Indian Ocean region.
