Knowing more about diabetes can help us better understand this chronic disease. However, did you know that there are some misconceptions and facts about diabetes?
📍Type 1 diabetes isn’t caused by eating sugar. It is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas.
📍Type 2 diabetes isn’t necessarily caused by diet. It can have a wide range of causes, including genetics and the natural rise of blood sugar that occurs with age.
📍There are not only 2 types of diabetes. There is also gestational diabetes (GDM), which can develop in women during pregnancy and usually disappears after delivery. As a result, the child may be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
📍Without careful management, diabetes can lead to complications such as stroke, heart disease, glaucoma, cataracts, artery disease, and diabetic foot among others.
📍Stress and lack of sleep and exercise also have an impact on your blood glucose levels.
