Operative Hysteroscopy -- A tiny hurdle cleared on the journey to a big dream. 💖

Today, an Operative Hysteroscopy has been performed successfuly —a key step in assessing and optimizing the uterus for pregnancy. Using a tiny camera, a small polyp has been gently removed, that was acting like a 'speed bump' inside the uterine lining (endometrium). This simple, minimally invasive procedure makes a world of difference to fall pregnant!

What's new and groundbreaking in women's health?

Last June, I had the incredible opportunity to dive deep into the future of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (RCOG) Annual Congress in London! Swipe through these 10 pictures to get a glimpse of the vibrant atmosphere and some of the amazing people I met!

From groundbreaking advancements in Artificial Reproductive Technology (ART) and IUI – topics particularly close to my heart – to the intricate details of Placenta Accreta and even pioneering Womb Transplantation, these discussions are forever engrained in my mind. And yes, even Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making significant strides in our medical fields, a fascinating development we explored in depth.

I also had the immense pleasure of reconnecting with an old university friend who now works in the UK. Dr J. Høge. She was one of the esteemed speakers at the congress! She presented on severe vomiting during pregnancy – known as hyperemesis gravidarum – a condition many women experience, and you can catch a glimpse of her impactful session in the video!

I was also incredibly fortunate to meet Dr. Jenny Carter, a renowned midwife from King's College, celebrated for leading high-quality trials and clinical studies in maternity care. We had a truly insightful long chat about best practices in maternity care.

Overall, this 3-day congress was an invaluable experience. I'm more devoted than ever to bringing the very best, most updated care and innovative solutions to my patients right here in Mauritius. My journey in exploring and advancing women's health is one I truly cherish!

I frequently treat conditions like ovarian cysts. While surgery can sound daunting, the good news is that laparoscopic removal offers significant advantages for many patients.

FROM BLOCKED TUBES TO TWIN BLESSINGS 🌈✨

This was the reality for one of my patients, who had been struggling with infertility for over 7 years.

After a thorough examination, I discovered that her fallopian tubes were blocked. This was confirmed through advanced imaging techniques (pictures below).

Laparoscopic fimbrioplasty is a delicate procedure that opens the blocked tubes while preserving crucial tissue, offered a glimmer of hope.

Just three months later, the unimaginable happened. Not one, but two tiny hearts began to beat within her. The joy was overwhelming, the disbelief profound.

Today, the patient is a proud mother of twins, her once-distant dream now a beautiful reality. Her journey is a testament to the power of hope. God bless!

THE JOURNEY TO PARENTHOOD: FINDING HOPE WITH INTRA UTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

Building a family is a deeply personal dream. For couples facing infertility, this journey can be filled with uncertainty and frustration. The good news is, advancements in reproductive medicine offer different paths to parenthood.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive and often successful treatment option for many couples. It involves placing specially prepared s***m directly into the woman's uterus, increasing the chances of fertilization compared to natural conception.

A Gentle Approach:

Less Invasivity: It's an outpatient procedure.
Reduced Cost: It's more affordable than IVF.
Naturalistic Process: It works within the body's natural conception pathway.

My Patients' Story:

Recently, I worked with a wonderful couple on their path to parenthood. Through careful monitoring and support, we were able to achieve a successful IUI. However, during a routine ultrasound, a delightful surprise awaited us – four tiny heartbeats! While surprised, the couple was overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of quadruplets, along with a touch of apprehension.

I recently had the opportunity to speak at an international conference on ART(Artificial Reproductive Technology) ie IUI, IVF, ICSI etc. I was honoured to be invited, and I learned a lot about the latest advances in the field. I'm excited to use this new knowledge to improve the care of my patients.

At the conference, I heard from leading experts on ART from all over the world. I learned about the latest treatments and technologies that are being developed , and I saw firsthand how these new approaches are helping patients.

I'm committed to providing my patients with the best possible care. That's why attending conferences like this one make me stay up-to-date on the latest advances in fertility treatments.

TWIN PREGNANCY # # Glimpse of my patient’s ultrasound scans throughout her pregnancy

This patient came with a history of primary infertility whereby she couldn’t fall pregnant for more than 4 years, despite following medical treatments. I had proposed the couple to undergo an Intra Uterine Insemination(IUI) and after 2 weeks, the pregnancy test resulted as being positive; She and her husband ran to my office with a huge smile….And this is where the whole story begins…

: ) This was a TWIN pregnancy…

I am about to show you the pleasures of seeing life x2 in-utero.(through some of the timed ultrasound scans until term gestation —dates hidden for privacy reasons)

While there’s no guaranteed way to predict whether a person will give birth to twins, there are certain factors that increase the likelihood of conceiving multiples which includes fertility treatments—like intra uterine insemination, in vitro fertilization (IUI, IVF etc)
In Mauritius, twin birth rate is 1.01% (134 twins in 13,142 according to statistics Mauritius, Published May 2022)

Endometriomas, well known as 'chocolate cysts' are cysts which are filled with menstrual blood. They are a sign of endometriosis, which is a condition that happens when tissue from the uterus gets implanted outside of it. These cysts may cause unpleasant symptoms such as menstrual pain, abdominal cramps etc which needs to be managed accordingly.
The pictures below shows one of my patient's case whereby laparoscopic cystectomy and deroofing had to be performed in view of the large size of the endometrioma. The Endometrioma can be well seen as being nearly of the same size as the uterus. The o***y was well preserved especially being a young patient, who's keen to conceive, in the near future.
