LPG Supply Vessels Involved in Fire Incident; Two Suffer Burn Injuries
Incidents like these are not isolated—they are tragedies waiting to happen. Despite the existence of numerous laws and regulations, such as those governing LPG storage, the Health and Safety Act, and related regulations, enforcement remains alarmingly weak. These frameworks often exist only on paper, with regulators lacking the authority, resources, or will to act effectively.
The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act remains largely dysfunctional due to unresolved jurisdictional issues between the Director General of OSH and the Labour Relations Authority (LRA). Meanwhile, the investigative body tasked with examining such accidents lacks the technical expertise needed to properly assess complex industrial incidents.
At the heart of the problem is a fragmented regulatory landscape and a glaring absence of accountability. Until safety is treated as a serious governance issue—with empowered regulators, clear mandates, and skilled personnel—we will continue to see preventable accidents and lives needlessly put at risk.
