What is Depression?
Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks.
In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms:
• a loss of energy;
• a change in appetite;
• sleeping more or less;
• anxiety;
• reduced concentration;
• indecisiveness;
• restlessness;
• feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and
• thoughts of self-harm or su***de.
Key Messages:
Depression is a common mental disorder that affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries.
Depression is not a sign of weakness.
The risk of becoming depressed is increased by
• poverty,
• unemployment,
• life events such as the death of a loved one or a relationship break-up,
• physical illness and
• problems caused by alcohol and drug use.
Depression causes mental anguish and can impact on people’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends.
Untreated depression can prevent people from working and participating in family and community life.
At worst, depression can lead to su***de.
Depression can be effectively prevented and treated. Treatment usually involves either a talking therapy or antidepressant medication or a combination of these.
Overcoming the stigma often associated with depression will lead to more people getting help.
Talking with people you trust can be a first step towards recovery from depression.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Depression as the theme for the next World Health Day (7th April 2017).

Millions of people with HIV are still missing out on life-saving treatment, which can also prevent HIV transmission to others," said Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. "HIV self-testing should open the door for many more people to know their HIV status and find out how to get treatment and access prevention services."

Dangers of self-medication

It has become a day to day habit among people to take medicines themselves without consulting a doctor. This habit of self-medication can be dangerous sometimes. If you don't have knowledge of medicines and not related to a medical profession then you should never take medicines on your own.

Bacterial resistance
Few drugs that are mostly overused are painkillers, antacids and antibiotics. If you decide to take antibiotics for any infection without a prescription, and not knowing which type of bacteria you are infected with, then there are chances that the bacteria will develop resistance to the antibiotics.

Drug turning overdose due to faulty organs
All the drugs that you take, go the liver as a part of our metabolism, so there is a huge load on liver to process these drugs. Paracetamol is one such drug that can cause severe liver damage. While processing this drug, metabolites are produced that invade the liver. If you already have a liver disease then avoid having panadol a lot(paracetamol)

Drugs go to the kidneys for their excretion through urine once they finish their action in the body. Many drugs when taken without the consultation of a doctor can cause kidney damage. An example of such a drug is diclofenac which causes kidney bleeding. This is one of the harmful effects of self-medication.

Allergic reactions
Some people react to drugs in a different manner than normal. They show severe reaction some particular drugs resulting in drug allergy. Symptoms include rashes, increased heart rate, reduced blood pressure, severe weakness, shock and unconsciousness which can ultimately lead to death also .

Drug interaction
If you are already on a particular medication and then you opt to have another one without consulting a doctor, chances are that they may render your prescription medication ineffective. As one drug may decrease or even increase the effect of other drugs. So be careful while having another drug.

Self-medication may increase the severity of your underlying diseases. For example if you are diabetic and then you take steroidal drugs to treat inflammation or pain then this drug may worsen your diabetes. So always ask a doctor before taking any medication.

Titration of dose
If you start taking anti-anxiety drugs or sedatives (sleeping pills) by yourself then you will have to increase the dose as the initial dose of the sleeping pills you used to take will turn ineffective for you gradually. A time will come when you will take many tablets together and still your body will not show any response as you have become tolerant to these drugs. So drugs should never be taken without medical supervision.

Stop self medication!
