Most places in Malawi have now received some rains! And now the big question comes…Should you start planting or should you wait?

Well, it all depends on how much rain your field has received. Some farmers will say, 'I’m planting now!' Others will say, 'Aaaah, let me wait for more rain'. Either way, you are taking a risk and that’s farming life!

But here is my friendly advice, If you did not make your ridges earlier, please use this week to make those ridges first! Don’t rush to plant seeds on soil that is not well prepared. If you hurry, you might lose your seeds for nothing and we don’t want that!

Take your time. Prepare the land well. Then plant with confidence.

Be the first… to do it right!

Reaching a goal feels good, but real change comes from how we work to reach it.

Imagine a change from 20 of you each contributing 2.5 acres, totalling 20 hectares. A minimum needed to qualify for Mega Farms Programme.

Working together gives you a chance to access support, inputs and markets that are difficult to get when working alone. Teamwork is the path to real growth in farming.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LAND FOR FARMING

Before buying fertiliser, seeds, or chemicals, secure the right land first. You don’t have to buy it, renting or borrowing can work, but make sure it’s suitable for the crop you want to grow.

5 things to check before choosing land:

1. Type of Crop– Make sure the soil suits your crop. Check what was grown before for better crop rotation.

2. Distance from Home – Farming needs supervision. Don’t rely on phone calls, be there often or else you risk failing.

3. Labour Availability– In places like Manolo in Mzimba, Vumbwe, Thyolo, or Mchinji, people may be busy with their own farms when you need help most.

4. Water Access – No water, no harvest. Ensure there’s a river, well, dam, or reliable rainfall.

5. Roads & Security – Easy access is important. Avoid areas with theft, disputes, or bad roads.

Good farming starts with good land.

Be the first!

New farming season (2025/2026) is almost around the corner. For most farmers, especially the ones in tobbaco farming, your season starts this August. For us that are in other farm produces such as Maize, Groundnuts, sunflower etc we have until september.

For first timers planning to go into farming this season, now is the time to gather resources. Time to rent some land, time to buy fertiliser, w**d control chemicals, seeds, and time to find new tenants.

Now is the time, or you risk your dream of becoming a self reliant citizen.
