Normally the airway has got squamous epithelium that lines it and has complement of antioxidants, alveoli macrophages and surfactants that protects the respiratory system.

To***co smoke releases free radicals that activates neutrophils to release other radicals that destroys the lung tissues as result a person shows laboured breathing, shortness of breath, fatigue. And it may cause reduced oxygenated blood supply to the heart result into heart failure.

Prolonged smoke may create harmful environment for squamous epithelium cells result into its transformation into cancerous cells which may be fatal.
