Prof Chris and Dr AnnE say "Tiwonana" to this amazing team and wish them well with their ongoing challenges. They will return with other UK colleagues in November when the emphasis will be on CME, teaching and training for our clinical officers from outlying clinics across Malawi.

At 5 years old, Favour successfuly overcame a cancerous tumour, at 7 his eyesight started to fail, at 8 his hearing was deteriorating until now, at 10, he is both deaf and blind, communicating with his mum who signs to him on his hand.
18 months ago, Favour was assessed for a cochlear implant by Chikondi Kuthyola and Prof Chris Raine. It has taken until now to overcome the challenges, but last week he eventually received his implant, hoping to improve his quality of life and educational opportunities. Thanks to MED-EL UK and SA and UK surgical team for their invaluable ongoing support.

Chris Bem, ENT surgeon and a remarkable human being.
Chris spends much time in the unit in Malawi, working quietly away with the team here. This year he has shared his passion for permaculture, Earth care, People care and Fair share, resulting in an amazingly productive garden on waste land in the hospital.

Not JUST a surgeon!
Prof Chris can turn his hand to most DIY around the ENT unit, even the specialised maintenance of the Unit's two autoclaves to keep them working superbly well - thank you Malawi Relief Fund UK for donating them for the lasting benefit of the unit more than 2 years ago.

TAKING EAR CARE TO THE PATIENTS
Much great work is done outside of hospital, our audiologists supporting those who can't travel by taking outreach clinics to them. So important now the challenge of travel in Malawi is even worse with exorbitant cost of fuel. For example, this month the TWEAR Foundation visited Msungwe lilongwe and saw 100 people, 43 of whom needed their help!

These two magnificent autoclaves were provided to our unit by the amazing Malawi Relief Trust in Nov 2023. They have enabled our ENT theatres to function independently of the main hospital bringing so many benefits. Thank you again MRF!

The UK Team this week was pleased to be able to source and change the water filter so essential to their function 👏🏻 and prevent future wiring problems with not-so-sophisticated aluminium foil:-) Going forwards they need regular maintenance - taken on by the QECH team.
The UK team through Bradford West Rotary Club also provided enough material for patient drapes and instrument tray wraps to hopefully last a year or two!
