These two magnificent autoclaves were provided to our unit by the amazing Malawi Relief Trust in Nov 2023. They have enabled our ENT theatres to function independently of the main hospital bringing so many benefits. Thank you again MRF!

The UK Team this week was pleased to be able to source and change the water filter so essential to their function 👏🏻 and prevent future wiring problems with not-so-sophisticated aluminium foil:-) Going forwards they need regular maintenance - taken on by the QECH team.
The UK team through Bradford West Rotary Club also provided enough material for patient drapes and instrument tray wraps to hopefully last a year or two!

And the maintenance continues! If Prof Chris cares enough to do this, so must we all after he goes back to UK.

Our Clinical Officers, Emmanuel Singano and Clement Chisanje Chawanda work so hard both in helping patients and in keeping the examination rooms up to scratch! Indeed the whole unit has an excellent reputation in Malawi!
"The best ENT unit in the country" and "State of the art" were comments heard at Rotary Club of Limbe, Malawi this week

3 of the UK team are very happy to be back in here with our Malawi ENT family!

Following Rotary Club of Limbe, Malawi meeting last week we were able to organise an impromptu open day giving our local ENT team chance to show off their great unit and talk about the work that goes on here.

Matron Squaiker Salema led the proceedings, Prof Wakisa Mulwafu told the story of the football pitch transformed into the present day unit, Dr Michel Ahoka introduced himself and his role as ENT Consultant and Emmanuel Singano one of out "oldest", most experienced Clinical Officers explained his work in the unit and in teaching and training before we set off to look around.

We all look fairly serious in this photo at the beginning of the morning, but by the end everyone was chatting, networking and the enthusiasm to help progress the unit was excitingly tangeable!
Thank you, Rotarians, Tikonze Apapa and Butterfly Foundation For Peace, for attending and contributing so much!

Well-deserved break after a hectic morning!
Screening the ears of the children at Butterfly Foundation For Peace (CEO Andrew Raphael, Right) was the initiative of Lilongwe audiologist, Regina Bickiel Kachapila (Middle), who travelled all the way to Blantyre just to do this, helped by her colleague, Dave Dyson from QECH in Blantyre.
Also involved were UK visitors, Rosie Mayer, Peter Mayer, Prof Christopher Raine and Anne Raine.
59 were seen, 17 with problems we could help.

The ENT team at Queens hosted the second Southern Africa Endoscopic Ear Surgery Course. An international faculty from UK, Zimbabwe and Tanzania delivered an intensive course involving lectures, practical lab work and live surgery to nine delegates from 7 African countries over 3 days. The unit was buzzing with enthusiasm that spilled over into the evenings.
Already planning the next one!

First priority this week was teaching and training our 66 amazing Clinical Officers who deliver ENT and audiology services to the whole of Malawi, from 23 centres!
Despite challenges of fuel, cost of living and time away from work, 19 attended a two day course here - so good to share the learning mixed with fun and fellowship - and, of course, dancing! Let's hope more can attend next time. Here are some of these wonderful people!
