Chikwawa District Health Office

Chikwawa District Health Office Under the Chikwawa District Council Secretariat, Chikwawa District Health Office (DHO) is responsible for the management of the Council's Health Sector.

Located in the BOMA area of the district, the DHO is housed within the District Hospital premises.

Today, 1st December, 2022 marks one year after heavy winds damaged and blew off Majete 1 Health Centre. The good news is that Partners In Health has handed over a rehabilitated Majete1 Health Centre. The rehabilitation works were also supported by African Parks who replaced a damaged Solar Water pump at the facility.

As services will be resuming at the health centre, other partners have also pledged to assist with medical and non-medical equipment which were equally damaged due to the same disaster.

The handover function was presided over by the Council Chairperson-Cllr Khofati Malunga, The District Commissioner-Mr. Ali Phiri, The Executive Director for PIH Malawi-Dr Luckson Dullie and other officials.

Majete 1 is located 100km away from the Boma in the area of Senior Chief Chapananga and it serves a population of about 12000.

Today 23rd September 2022, AIDS Healthcare Foundation-Malawi has made a donation of drugs worthy USD15,000. These drugs include antibiotics like Gentamicin, Ceftriaxone and Benzyl Penicillin. Dr. Emmanuate Kwataine, Regional Medical Officer, handed over the drugs to the Council's Director of Health and Social Services, Dr. Zinkanda.

Chikwawa District Health Office is implementing a 4 year long Health Systems Strengthening project, Umoyo Wathu, with support from the British Government through UNICEF.

The district conducted the year 2 planning for the project at Chang'ambika Health Centre on 8th September, 2022. This approach intended to inform the planning process with the context of the health facilities in the District.

Chang'ambika is located in the area of Senior Chief Chapananga, 98 kilometers away from the Boma. This facility was closed for over 12 years and has recently been reopened. Its catchment population is around 11 000 people.

As the National Community Health Strategy 2017-2022 is coming to an end, today 2nd September 2022, Chikwawa District Council received July Health Post from the Redcross Society of Malawi.
July Health Post in the area of Senior Chief Chapanaga, is health post number 6 to be constructed in the district using modern government design.
The handover ceremony was graced by the Council Chairperson, Councillor Malunga, Council Officials and Redcross Senior Officicers.

Today, 23rd August 2022, the Deputy Minister of Health, Hon. Enock Phale was handed over Therere Health Centre in Ngabu by the Japanese Ambassodor to Malawi His Excellency Satoshi Iwakiri.

This facility has been constructed by the Gift of the Givers with funding from the Japanese Embassy. The Ministry of Health; Chikwawa District Council; Gift of the Givers and the area's MP Hon. Abida Mia contributed towards equipment and other accessories for the facility.

As the nation is striving towards Universal Health Coverage, opening of Therere increases the number of Health Centres in the Chikwawa to 29. The facility will serve over 11,000 people including pregnant mothers who who were walking over 15kms to access Maternal and Child Healthcare.

Other senior officials in attendance were the Council Chairperson, the District Commissioner, Health and Environment Committee Chairpersom, TA Ngabu, Council Directors and District Health Management Team members.

With support from Malawi Red Cross Society, construction works for July Health Post and Staff Residence, located in GVH July, TA Chapananga, have been completed. The facility is set to be formally handed over to on the 25th of August, 2022.
