RED MEAT AND GOUT
Gout is primarily a metabolic and dietary disorder, not a meat-related disease. Elevated uric acid levels occur due to two main mechanisms:
1. Reduced excretion by the kidneys
2. Excess production by the liver
1. Reduced Kidney Excretion
This is commonly caused by kidney stressors such as:
Diabetes, Hypertension, Other kidney related diseases
When the kidneys are compromised, they fail to eliminate excess uric acid efficiently.
2. Excess Liver Production
The liver overproduces uric acid when it receives too many raw materials for its synthesis. These raw materials include:
Fructose sugars, table sugar, fruit juices, fruits, feezy drinks, honey, sugar cane.
Alcohol: especially beer and wine
Managing Gout Effectively
Treating gout arthritis requires addressing both causes:
Reduce uric acid production
Improve uric acid excretion, this can be achieved by
proper management of hypertension and diabetes
Eliminating or significantly reducing alcohol intake
Avoiding excess fructose sugar
This explains why gout is more common in individuals who are obese, hypertensive, diabetic, or have metabolic disorders.
Important Clarification
Gout has nothing to do with red meat.
Gout cannot be cured by medications alone such as allopurinol or goutstat
Gout is not a βmeat diseaseβ it is a metabolic disease.
Advising someone with gout and high uric acid to completely stop eating red meat is one of the most common recommendations and it is incorrect.
Case Example
A 57-year-old man presented with:
Weight gain
High blood pressure
Recurrent gout attacks
His laboratory results showed:
HbA1c: 5.8% (prediabetes)
Uric acid: 10.4 mg/dL (very high)
Instead of eliminating red meat, we focused on correcting the root cause insulin resistance by:
Improving diet quality
Increasing physical activity
Ensuring adequate sleep and rest
Results After 16 Weeks
20 kg weight loss
5 inches reduction in waist circumference
Blood pressure normalized
Blood pressure medications discontinued
HbA1c reduced from 5.8% to 5.3% (prediabetes reversed)
Uric acid reduced from 10.4 mg/dL to 5.2 mg/dL
No further gout attacks
