*April 10, 205 Parliament Passes Mental Health Bill*

Parliament has passed Bill No. 17 of 2025, Mental Health, which replaces the outdated Mental Treatment Act of 1948.

The Bill shifts the focus from a medical-based approach to a human rights-based approach, prioritizing the dignity and well-being of individuals with mental health conditions.

It also establishes the Mental Health Board to regulate the management, treatment, and rehabilitation of people with mental health issues and promote their human rights and freedoms.

Key Provisions in the Bill:
• Rights of Persons with Mental Health Conditions: These include the right to recognition before the law, employment, fair treatment, access to information, and the highest attainable standard of mental health care.
• Informed Consent: Requires consent from individuals or their supporters for treatment and rehabilitation.
• Safeguarding Health and Safety: Mental health facilities must provide a safe environment for patients and society.
• Custody and Admission Procedures: Outlines procedures for taking individuals into custody or admitting them for treatment.
• Visiting Committees: Established to monitor treatment and investigate complaints.
• Administration of Property: Allows court-appointed administrators to manage individuals' property.

Thank you Parliament of Malawi, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Health

Something to reflect on!

Valentine’s Day should not have you automatically reaching for your wallet; it should be a time to celebrate your relationship with your partner & there’s no price tag on that!

Stay in with a much-loved movie, spend time asking each other open-ended questions, or do something else with your partner that the two of you can enjoy. Valentine’s Day presents a perfect opportunity to establish a ritual of connection in your relationship. By watching the same movie, you will form a lasting tradition that you look forward to. This tradition will also give you the opportunity to look back on your relationship and reminisce about years past, reminding you of how strong your bond has become.

What are your favorite rituals of connection - or traditions - around Valentine's Day?

Decriminalize Su***de Attempt!

The number of people dying by su***de has been rising in Malawi. Su***de is already a stigmatized issue and any law that criminalises su***de attempt only serves to encourage the existing stigma and discrimination against people with mental health conditions.

Criminalising su***de also makes it very difficult for people to talk to those around them and/or seek help. In addition, it makes it even more difficult for our country to effectively and adequately respond to su***de and provide the much needed support to individuals and communities.

Su***de is a public health issue not a crime. Now is the time for to decriminalize su***de attempt and invest in su***de prevention, intervention and postvention.

We call upon the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice and our honourable Members of Parliament to do the needful this month as Parliament meets!
