Engaging and Empowering Adolescents through Human Rights and Self-Advocacy

This week, with support from GRYN, we launched a transformative session: Engaging and Empowering Adolescents through Human Rights and Self-Advocacy. Young people are speaking up, learning their rights, and becoming changemakers in their communities.
Because every adolescent deserves to grow up safe, dignified, and empowered.

Dialogue for Change: UPD Listens to Vulnerable Populations

UPD recently visited Lilambwe village in Dowa District to engage with vulnerable members of the community of persons living with disabilities, and parents of children with disabilities, with critical hardship.

This interaction was organised to hear directly from them about their daily struggles, to understand what support they need most, and to explore together sustainable, and long-term solutions.
A particular focus was placed on ensuring equal access to education, and removing barriers that prevent people with disabilities from attending school and fully participating in learning opportunities.

Through capacity building, social advocacy, awareness raising campaign, and providing support services (including mobility assistance and counselling), UPD is committed to creating an inclusive environment where every person is respected, supported, and able to thrive.

At UPD, we believe that development is measured by how we treat the most vulnerable, no one should be left behind.
Support UPD to turn these priorities into concrete results. Share this post, follow our next steps, and stay engaged.
Contact UPD if you can contribute equipment, volunteer time, technical expertise, or financial support.

Monday, 22 September 2025, first School Year at Umoja Secondary School

On 22 September 2025, a historic moment took place as Umoja Secondary School officially opened its doors for the very first academic year!
For our students, it marked the beginning of a new school year, celebrated with the morning assembly, a true symbol of unity and discipline ,before heading into their classrooms.
This first academic journey is more than just a beginning; it is an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to build a brighter future together.
At Umoja Secondary School, we believe every student carries unique potential, and we are committed to guiding them toward academic excellence and personal growth.
We wish our students and teachers a successful school year filled with knowledge, discoveries, and achievements.

BRAKING THE SILENCE
Sponsored by GRYN RYLO

Through the Breaking the Silence initiative, we are strengthening the skills and knowledge of local organizations and community leaders in responding to gender-based violence (GBV) cases.
This program equips frontline actors with inclusive, survivor-centered approaches to support victims, prevent abuse, and promote justice.
Together, we are building safer, more informed, and more compassionate communities, where silence no longer shields violence, and speaking out becomes a force for change.

Umoja Secondary School

A Foundation for Inclusion and Excellence
In the heart of this fertile land rises a school unlike any other. Umoja Secondary School is not just building walls, however, a shaping of the future where every student, regardless of their background and physical appearance, finds their rightful place. Thoughtfully designed architecture, accessible sanitation facilities, fresh air from trees around and a peaceful environment reflect a deep commitment to inclusion, dignity, and the right to quality education.

Umoja Secondary School Teachers' Meeting

This was the first meeting bringing together all secondary school teachers at Umoja.
The goal was to lay the foundation for a supportive and inclusive learning environment, where every individual feels welcome and respected.
Together, we identified key priorities for the academic year, focusing on the structure of the educational system and the pedagogical approach we aim to adopt collectively.
