Melanoma comes from skin cells called melanocytes. These cells produce melanin, the dark pigment that gives skin its color. Most melanomas are black or brown in color, but some are pink, red, purple or skin-colored.
About 30% of melanomas begin in existing moles, but the rest start in normal skin. This makes it especially important to pay attention to changes in your skin because the majority of melanomas don't start as moles.

Clinically, it is common for patients to delay treatment due to misjudging the nature of moles! Moles that are asymmetrical, have blurred boundaries and uneven colors need to be closely observed. Warts have a latent period. Once discovered, do not scratch them. Timely examination is the key.

Could your mole be cancerous? It only requires the ABCDE principle for inspection
Moles on the skin may seem ordinary, but they may hide potential health risks. Teach everyone to use the simple ABCDE principle for self-examination to quickly identify the early signs of melanoma!
A (Asymmetry, asymmetry) : Normal moles usually have a symmetrical shape, while melanoma often has asymmetry on both sides and an odd shape.
B (Border, boundary) : Benign moles have clear and regular boundaries; If the edge of a mole is blurry, serrated or uneven, be vigilant.
C (Color, color) : Ordinary moles have uniform color, while melanoma may present with varying shades of black, brown, and even mixed with abnormal colors such as red, white, and blue.
D (Diameter, diameter) : Moles with a diameter greater than 6mm have a higher risk of malignancy. If they grow rapidly within a short period of time, more attention should be paid.
E (Evolving, Change) : A sudden change in the size, shape, color or surface of a mole (such as itching, ulceration, bleeding) is a warning sign!
Don't panic if you find anything abnormal during your self-check, but don't ignore it either! It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly and have it evaluated by a professional dermatologist. Early detection and early intervention can minimize risks!

Normal moles and melanoma differ in the following aspects:
Normal moles: They are usually round or oval in shape, with clear boundaries and uniform color, which can be brown, black, brown, etc. The diameter is generally less than 6 millimeters, the surface is smooth, and they are level with or slightly higher than the surrounding skin.
Melanoma: Its shape is often irregular, with indistinct boundaries and varying shades of color. It can present as a mixture of multiple colors, such as black, brown, red, and white. The diameter is usually greater than 6 millimeters, and the surface may be rough, scaly, or nodular or cauliflower.
Growth rate
Normal moles: They grow slowly and usually show no significant changes in size, shape or color over the years.
Melanoma: It grows rapidly and can significantly increase in size, thicken or change shape within a short period of time (such as a few months or weeks).
Normal symptoms of moles: Generally, there are no subjective symptoms, and there will be no itching, pain, ulceration, bleeding, etc.
Symptoms of melanoma: It may be accompanied by itching and pain, and is prone to rupture and bleeding. Satellite foci (i.e., small moles around moles) may also appear on the surrounding skin.
