Our team of 12 students and 4 staff members recently travelled to Mzuzu to commemorate the WORLD HEARING DAY. World Hearing Day is a global awareness day dedicated to promoting ear and hearing care, preventing hearing loss, and encouraging early identification and treatment of hearing problems.

In collaboration with Wezi Medical Centre, where our new ABC-Wezi Hearing clinic is located. We conducted a successful community outreach that reached 149 people. During the outreach we performed otoscopy screenings, offered ear and hearing health education, and referred many individuals for further clinical assistance at Wezi.

This initiative is important because people in the Northern Region often have to travel over 360 km from Mzuzu to Lilongwe to access specialized hearing Services. With the ABC-Wezi Hearing clinic, communities can now receive help closer to home.

The outreach also gained national television coverage, helping spread awareness about ear and hearing health to an even wider audience.

One of the patients interviewed shared their appreciation, saying they were grateful that services were brought closer to the people, as many had never even heard about hearing care services before.

👏Together we can achieve so much more.
Let's continue to raise awareness, support ear and hearing health, and ensure no one is left behind.

📢If you or someone you know may have hearing difficulties, visit the ABC-Wezi Hearing clinic at Wezi Medical Center in Mzuzu or reach out to us for guidance. Early help can change lives!

Project S.H.A.R.E (Support Hearing Aid Rehabilitation and Education)

A project initiated to provide regular audiology services, training and resources to the four Deaf Schools in the Northern and Central regions of Malawi.

It includes two week-long visits a year by our audiology team, to reach 4 Deaf Schools where we provide hundreds of hearing impaired students with full audiological assessments, hearing aid fittings and follow up, as well as, Auditory Rehabilitation Training.

The team also provides training and support for the teaching staff in Hearing Aid maintenance and monitoring. Monthly telehealth calls are being made to each of the four schools to ensure regular monitoring and follow up.

A week well spent at MUA Deaf School under our program S.H.A.R.E- Support Hearing Aid Rehabilitation and Education.

Our team of 9; 3 staff and 6 audiology students had the privilege of providing essential hearing care to 166 learners at MUA. Throughout the week, we carried out Otoscopy, Tympanometry, Ear canal Management, Pure Tone Audiometry, and took ear impressions in preparation for fitting hearing aids on our next visit.

We're grateful for the chance to serve, learn, and make a difference - one ear at a time.

Here's a look at some of the highlights

This past week, our passionate audiology team of 3 dedicated Clinicians and 6 enthusiastic student clinicians had the privilege of traveling to Bandawe School for the deaf in the Northern Region of Malawi. This outreach mission focused on providing audiological assessments, hearing aid fittings, and counseling services to the amazing special needs students and staff at the school.

We were warmly welcomed by children whose smiles and energy can light up any room. Despite communication barriers, the connection was strong and full of joy, curiosity and mutual respect. Interacting with these incredible students gave us a deeper appreciation for their resilience and unique strengths.

Throughout the days, our team made sure each child was seen, heard, and valued. We emphasized a message close to our hearts:

Your Future is bright
Your abilities are powerful
Your dreams are valid with no limits attached.

They may have a hearing difference, but there is NOTHING they cannot achieve when supported and empowered. Their determination continues to inspire us all.

One highlight came from speaking with Dan Chagomelana, one of our student clinicians who is a future leader in audiology. He shared that this experience taught him what it truly means to lead with confidence, humility, and purpose. With each child he assisted, he learned the importance of patience, compassion, and understanding; not only as a clinician, but as a human being.

"Being trusted to take care of them showed me that I must also trust myself" Dan reflected. "Every small improvement in their hearing meant the world."

This mission reaffirmed why we serve:
To ensure that every person, regardless of hearing ability, receives the care, encouragement, and opportunities they deserve.

We left Bandawe inspired by the strength and spirit of the Deaf Community. We are excited to continue learning, supporting, and advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and hearing health for all.
