Began on Monday, June 9, 2025, the four-day conference aims to discuss agricultural technologies that will revolutionize African agriculture and equip farmers with the knowledge necessary to optimize practices and better understand the intricacies of modern agriculture. Farmers called for an ecosystem-based approach that focuses on scaling up new technologies while centering farmers in their development. Both panelists and farmers agreed on the importance of inclusion of farmers in technological design and fostering collaboration between farmers and innovators. The African Agriculture Technology Foundation and AgriEdge have also announced a partnership to support smallholder farmers by transforming development and adoption of digital agriculture technologies across Africa.

On May 22nd and 23rd, 2025, CISANET under the Combating Corruption in Affordable Input Program (COCOA) project convened a capacity-building workshop with the Phalombe CSO Network and the District Agriculture Extension Coordinating Committee (DAECC).

This initiative seeks to enhance transparency and accountability in the Affordable Inputs Program (AIP), ensuring the equitable distribution of agricultural inputs to smallholder farmers across Malawi. With support from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the participants were capacitated on the forms and implications of corruption, equipping them with skills to identify and report corruption cases and foster community engagement in preventing corruption in AIP.

Through an interactive approach, participants engaged in discussions on the key challenges affecting AIP implementation and developed indicators and guiding questions for scorecards. These scorecards will be used to assess the transparency, efficiency, and fairness of AIP processes at the local level.

This initiative is a crucial step towards strengthening social accountability in the agriculture sector. By empowering community members with knowledge and tools, CISANET aims to ensure that public programs like AIP achieve their intended outcomes, providing essential support to smallholder farmers and improving their access to agricultural inputs.

The Right to Food Coalition, a collaborative network comprising civil society organizations, networks, and individual experts in Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) operating in Malawi, was established in 2021. Its primary objective is to enhance the coordination among food system stakeholders and to create participatory mechanisms for monitoring, feedback, and accountability regarding the ex*****on of food and nutrition programs.

Recently, CISANET, which serves as the coalition's secretariat, organized a meeting to present a joint report on the status of the right to food in Malawi. This report aims to inform the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) processes in Malawi and is part of ongoing advocacy efforts to promote the realization of the Right to Food within the country. This initiative aligns with the role of civil society in ensuring that every individual in Malawi fully enjoys the right to food, a fundamental principle acknowledged by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
