✨ Strengthening Women’s Health Through Early Detection ✨

From 3rd to 8 th November 2025, Uchembere Wabwino Maternity Clinic conducted a Cervical Cancer Screening Campaign focused on reaching women within our surrounding communities in Mzimba.

During this period, we screened 58 women for cervical cancer.
Of these, 3 women tested VIA positive and were treated immediately on the same day using thermocoagulation. This approach is critical in preventing loss to follow-up and stopping the progression of pre-cancerous lesions.

🔹 Key Highlights
• Total women screened: 58
• First-time screeners: 45
• VIA Positive cases treated same day: 3
• VIA Negative results: 52
• Most represented age group: 25–29 years
• No presumptive cervical cancer cases identified

This campaign reinforces the importance of accessible, community-based screening. Early detection saves lives, protects families, and empowers women with knowledge and care.

We are deeply grateful to our dedicated team of providers and to the women who came forward for screening. Their courage to prioritize their health inspires us every day.

As we look ahead, our goal is to expand outreach screening to more villages, strengthen follow-up systems, and continue reducing preventable deaths caused by cervical cancer.

🤝 We welcome partnerships and support to sustain and scale this life-saving work.
Together, we can ensure that every woman has access to early screening and treatment.

✨ Strengthening Systems for Greater Impact ✨

This week, our team had the opportunity to participate in an onboarding meeting with the Hivos SRH Fund in Zambia. The session focused on strengthening safeguarding and financial policies to ensure that organizations like ours uphold the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and protection for all.

We are excited to be part of this partnership and look forward to working together to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in our communities. 💪🏽🌍

On 24th September 2025, I had the privilege of training an inspiring group of women and men at St. John of God , who are dedicated caregivers of children with disabilities. 🌟

Our session focused on Lean Start-Up principles equipping them with practical tools and strategies to sustain and grow their small businesses while continuing to support their children.

What stood out to me most was their resilience, creativity, and determination to build a better future for their families. 💪🏾❤️

These caregivers are true community changemakers, proving every day that economic empowerment and caregiving can go hand in hand, creating lasting impact in their homes and communities. 🙌🏾

🌟 **Introducing Our Youth Community Advisory Board!** 🌟

This week, we officially onboarded our Uche Youth for Change Community Advisory Board 🙌. Together, we shared the vision and goals of the movement and explored strategies to strengthen adolescent reproductive health in our communities.

Our young leaders brought forward brilliant ideas on how to empower more youths to access knowledge and information on family planning through the Uche Safe App 📲—a tool designed to put accurate, youth-friendly health information at your fingertips.

We are excited to see this board lead the way in shaping programs that truly respond to the needs of young people. 💡💬✨

👉 Stay tuned as we share their journey and impact!

It's very sad to note that we have lost a remarkable leader who wanted to build Africa with his intelligence and funding to community read organizations in Africa. Without his generosity our clinic could not have had alot of impact in terms of improving maternal and child health care services. He was a great man with zeal and passion for his work and the entire foundations that he had established. We have no proper words to express our sadness towards this dark hour. You were one in Billion of Funders. You will forever be remembered in our hearts

A great tree has fallen in the forest of philanthropy: Barry Segal, founder of Segal Philanthropies, has passed away.

Barry lived ninety purposeful years, including founding and growing a successful roofing supply business (Bradco Supply) and, following its sale, devoting himself to several major philanthropic endeavors.

The first of these took the form of Segal Family Foundation, born of a life-changing trip to Rwanda in 2008 inspired by the Clinton Global Initiative. The visit opened his eyes to Sub-Saharan Africa as a region of the world where he could make a meaningful mark supporting local, grassroots organizations. Segal Family Foundation is now one of the most impactful American funders in Africa — second only to the Gates Foundation by number of grants — and was honored with Catalyst 2030’s Overall Best Donor award in 2023.

Barry was someone who noticed problems, called them out, and actually did something about them. In his own words, “I got involved in philanthropy because a lot of things bother me — things like corporate greed, profiting off prisons, and the failure of institutions to protect children from abuse, to name a few. I also feel fortunate to be in a position where I can use my wealth to help those who don’t have the same opportunities I did.”

In 2015, he founded Focus for Health Foundation to alleviate inequities in the United States — and next came Focus Central America Foundation, in 2021, to address the issues fueling forced migration in the region. These three foundations are staffed by mission-driven teams and operate under Segal Philanthropies, which is now led by his son, Martin Segal. Each year, his charitable giving amounts to $22 million in unrestricted funding distributed to over 600 organizations globally at a median grant size of $20,000.

Barry lived his life very much on his own terms, still going into the Segal Philanthropies offices daily at the age of 90. It was his wish that more wealthy individuals would share their fortunes and invest in making life better for others. His hope was that this work would continue long after he was gone. It will.

He hoped that other people would see Segal Philanthropies’ efforts, care about them, and do likewise. “It’s hard to make big changes in the world, but every time you help lift a child out of poverty and give them access to education, you contribute to improving our world,” he said. So, in lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial contributions be made to support Focus for Health grantee organizations whose work includes combatting child sexual abuse, advancing criminal justice reform, and addressing social determinants of health (See article for details).

A man of many passions, including sports, particularly tennis, which he played avidly into his eighties — Barry was the proud patriarch of a large and loving family. He was a devoted father to six children, an admired father-in-law, and a cherished grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was also a mentor and lifelong friend to many; his generosity touched more lives than can be counted.

His legacy will live on through his family, his friends, his business and philanthropic achievements, and the countless lives he changed around the world. He will be deeply missed, and his influence and vision will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Barry Segal. 💚
