THE FIGHT AGAINST CHOLERA BEGINS WITH MINDSET CHANGE

In support of the WASH initiatives of distributing soap, chlorine and water quality testing, the PHC Department is also currently rolling out Health talks on Cholera prevention at the hospital, around the catchment areas and markets.

This series of activities began on the 8th of January targeting the current cholera outbreak in the district and rain season which is also a high risk factor to Cholera spreading.

The initiative will help boost people's understanding on the importance of adherence to preventive measures and follow health practices at all times.

"Let's keep our communities safe, Prevent Cholera!!"

PHC-Female Ward Corridor Construction

In November 2024, we started constructing a corridor or pathway connecting the PHC Department Offices and the Female Ward.

During the rainy season the pathway from PHC to Female Ward is usually wet and muddy making it slippery increasing the risk of falls among workers, clients and patients.

Because of such, we moved to construct this corridor to minimise the risk of falls as well as to give the hospital a new look.

We hope to complete this corridor by February 2025.

Engagement Meeting with Kajoni Village Development Committees (VDCs) on Construction of Health Surveillance Assistant's House

The team from PHC visited the Kajoni Catchment Area, which has two VDCs, Bale and Kajoni. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of building a house for the Health Surveillance Assistant (HSA) in the catchment.

It should be mentioned that the community has already begun raising funds for the project through Kanakulela, it's principal. For the same project, the VDCs raised funds and molded 12,000 bricks; they are now attempting to add more bricks.

During the meeting a way forward was discussed in making the project a reality (more to come).

At the end, the PHC Director commended the VDCs for their effort and commitment in ensuring they take the lead on matters concerning them.

The meeting ended with a tour to check the land where the house will be built and also to check the bricks that have been molded.

Katochi Clinic taking Shape!

Today, the PHC Director, Senior HSA & Maintenance Supervisor visited Katochi Clinic to check progress on construction of the clinic.

The clinic is at an advanced stage and we hope by June 2025 it should be complete.

The aim of the clinic is to provide preventive and promotive health services, however, it has been built as a health post to provide room for basic clinical and nursing services in the future.

Katochi Maize Mill Kick-starts!

We managed to install a maize mill in Katochi which became operational in December 2024.

Katochi is one of the hardest to reach areas in Livingstonia. People in Katochi travel to chitimba and Lwatizi to access milling services.

We hope this development will help people in Katochi and Mahilu in saving their time and resources travelling long distances for milling services.

Today, join us as we celebrate the Holy matrimony of our very own Staff Arsene Mhoza who earlier today has wedded Naomi Chikuntha.

Mr. Mhoza has been an integral part of our PHC team, providing exceptional care and compassion in his field of Occupational Safety and Health. We're thrilled to celebrate this new chapter in his life.

To the happy couple, may your love continue to grow stronger with each passing day and always put God First in everything. May you always find joy, laughter, and adventure together.

DGMH Says No to Home Deliveries!!

Today, at Chakaka, we hosted a community dialogue engaging the chiefs and the community at large; the aim was to address the issue of home deliveries, which are on the rise in the catchment area, especially in Chakaka.

The session helped highlight the problems and recommendations in addressing the issue. The community took the lead on facilitating the process through their chiefs.

One of the chiefs was quoted saying, "The penalties need to be adjusted to see fit that the community respects having pregnant women on a waiting period to go to the hospital." This was seconded by the fellow chiefs, highlighting solidarity against home deliveries by local leaders.

Today at DGMH, the Family Planning and SBCC & Youth team hosted a Condom Distributor Training session for the youth from Mantchewe and Lwatizi catchments.

The sole reason was to help alleviate the cases of teenage pregnancy which are mostly backdated to the festive season and the target areas are also prevalent in HIV infection.

The youth have been tasked with the distribution of about a thousand pieces of condoms and also host social behaviour change communication activities, this will be sustained in the years to follow.

Today, at Kaziwiziwi Coal Mine we conducted an engagement meeting with the Mine management on Occupational health / Risk management and TB which was a follow-up activity to set ground with the management based on the assessment which was conducted last week.

The team from DGMH had an opportunity to present the findings of the assessment and the required recommendations to the management. The management accepted all issues pointed out and agreed to take action as recommended.

Another segment was held with the miners on social behaviour change, using Theatre for Development to create TB awareness to help them understand the causes of the disease, its dangers and means of prevention. We involved the youth and volunteers to do this.
