In the heart of winter,
when the nights are long
and the days are cold,
our shadow begins to catch up.
The wild, untamed parts of us
silenced for the greater good.
Taught from an early age to be the good girl,
to stay in line,
to rule and order ourselves.
Our desires were redirected
toward money,
toward buying homes,
toward having babies…
And yet, for each of us,
there comes a moment
when the shadow returns.
On a dark cold winter day.
When we lose a job.
When we find ourselves in a toxic relationship.
When we file for divorce.
When we look illness into the eye.
In these moments,
external structures no longer hold.
What once kept us “safe” stops working.
Now we remember
the unfulfilled, burning wishes.
The longing to stop being polite.
The desire to liberate our voice,
to free our bodies from clothes
that no longer fit who we are.
It is in these moments,
when life pulls the ground from beneath us,
that we begin to trust our intuition.
