Cosmetic eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) in Cancún can help restore a more rested and youthful appearance to the eyes and face. The eye surgeon removes excess skin to correct drooping of the upper and/or lower eyelids, and excess fat to remove the “bags” around the eyes.
With age, the skin on the upper and lower eyelids loses its elasticity. The eyes appearance makes the face look much older and tired.
Reasons for operation can vary:
• Skin folds hanging of the upper eyelid, aged skin or fat bags prolapse.
• Ptosis of the upper eyelid.
• Redundancy of the skin of the lower eyelid.
• Eye bags.
• Asymmetry.
• Low Eyebrows.
Fortunately, each of these problems can be quickly fixed by eyelid surgery. The Doctor will carefully discuss your goals and expectations and a physical examination will be conducted.
In most eyelid surgeries, local anesthesia is used, with or without intravenous sedation.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery will be performed at our Operating Room, as an outpatient, under a microscope. Dr. Capote considers Blepharoplasty a microsurgery due to the delicate anatomy of the structures involved in this surgery. It may be combined with other procedures, such as brow lift.
A detailed drawing of the skin and/or fat to be removed is drawn on the skin. The surgery is planned and marked to preserve a natural expression and eye shape as well as the mechanical function of the eyelids. The surgeon removes the previously determined amount of excess skin, muscle and fat, and the incision is then closed with small stitches.
The lower eyelid puffiness is caused by the accumulation of excess skin and/or fat. This fat is independent of body weight and migrates forward with the aging of the eyelid tissues. The fat is removed through a small incision on the inside of the eyelid (Transconjunctival approach) The precise amount of fat is removed or may be repositioned into the groove below the lower eyelid or cheek to prevent the “hollow look” that some people develop with age. If after fat removal there is excess skin, it may then be trimmed by making an incision immediately below the eyelashes. When it heals, this incision is virtually imperceptible. The operation takes from 40 minutes to two hours.
THE POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD
The first one to two hours after surgery are spent in the recovery room where cold compresses are applied to minimize swelling. You will be encouraged to keep your head elevated for several days, and to use cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising. There is very little if any pain following eyelid surgery. Pain medication is prescribed, although it is usually not necessary.
Eye ointment may be prescribed for use at night and eye drops for daytime. In most cases the bruising is minimal and resolves after the first week. The stitches are removed five to seven days following surgery. The incisions may remain pink for a short period after surgery and usually fade and become unnoticed in four to six weeks.
Most patients return to work and social activities after one week. Strenuous physical exercise is avoided for two to three weeks following cosmetic eyelid surgery.
