The heartbeat is one of the very first functions to appear during development - but it also plays a critical role in shaping how the heart itself forms.

New research from the The Francis Crick Institute reveals how the growing heart “self-organises,” using feedback between heartbeats and cell shape changes to build the muscular ridges (trabeculae) that are essential for proper function.

By studying transparent zebrafish embryos, the team captured 3D videos of beating hearts, discovering that cells stretch and rearrange, not just divide, to grow the heart.

These insights could one day help us understand and treat cardiomyopathies and other heart diseases.

🐘🦏🫂❤️‍🩹🥹Mohanmala, una elefanta que dedicó más de medio siglo a proteger rinocerontes, enfrentar cazadores furtivos y rescatar vidas humanas durante devastadoras inundaciones, nadando hasta zonas inaccesibles para embarcaciones. Llegó al Parque Nacional Kaziranga el 17 de mayo de 1970, donde se convirtió en una figura clave para la conservación, admirada por su fuerza, valentía y vínculo con los guardabosques. Participó en innumerables operaciones contra cazadores ilegales, salvando especies en peligro, y fue clave durante las peores crecidas del río Brahmaputra, transportando suministros y personas a salvo. Falleció en agosto de 2025, a los 85 años, recibiendo honores oficiales en una emotiva ceremonia, un reconocimiento reservado a verdaderos héroes.

Traditionally, producing life-saving medicines like Botox or tetanus vaccines has required animal testing to meet global safety standards. But, a new breakthrough from The University of Sheffield could change that.

Researchers have developed a human neuron-like cell assay that’s 10x more sensitive than standard animal testing methods, and could replace the use of animals in toxin safety tests in the future.
