Hipatia de Alejandría fue una de las mentes más brillantes del mundo antiguo. Nació en Egipto hacia finales del siglo IV, en una ciudad que era el gran faro del conocimiento: Alejandría. Hija del matemático Teón, creció rodeada de libros, ideas y debates, y pronto superó incluso la reputación de su maestro. Se convirtió en matemática, astrónoma y filósofa, con una claridad de pensamiento que la hizo destacar en un tiempo en que pocas mujeres podían dedicarse a la ciencia.

Entre sus aportaciones se encuentra el perfeccionamiento de instrumentos como el astrolabio y el hidrómetro, que servían para medir posiciones de los astros y la densidad de líquidos. También escribió comentarios sobre obras matemáticas fundamentales de Euclides y Diofanto, lo que ayudó a que esos conocimientos se preservaran y se transmitieran a generaciones futuras.
