Dec. 1 marks the start of 𝑪𝒓𝒐𝒉𝒏’𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑾𝒆𝒆𝒌! We’re joining the IBD community to raise awareness about these chronic conditions.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). While there are currently no cures, many treatment options are available.

Crohn’s disease causes inflammation in the digestive system and while it can show up in any part of the GI tract, the lower part of the small intestine (the ileum) is the most common part of the body affected. It can affect people of all races and ethnicities and is usually found between ages 13 and 30. The condition results in uncomfortable symptoms, including:

▪ Belly pain and cramps
▪ Diarrhea
▪ Weight loss
▪ Re**al bleeding

Ulcerative colitis is more common worldwide compared to Crohn’s, and affects the colon and re**um, plus parts or all of the large intestine. Ulcerative colitis is more likely to develop in individuals between the ages of 15 and 30, or older than 60 years of age, and includes symptoms such as:

▪ Diarrhea
▪ Blood in the stool
▪ Urgency or immediate need to go to the bathroom
▪ Increased bowel movements
▪ Belly pain and cramping
