Meeting with the Head of INAMI
A meeting was held with the head of INAMI, representative of the National Institute of Migration (INM), to address important topics regarding entry requirements into Mexico. Key points discussed included:
The requirement for U.S. passports as valid documents for entering the country.
The implementation and transition of the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), including the new digital format and passport stamp.
The goal of the meeting was to clarify current regulations and strengthen institutional cooperation to ensure the orderly and legal entry of visitors into Mexico.
What is the FMM?
The Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), commonly known as the tourist card, is a Mexican immigration document issued to foreigners entering the country for tourism, business, or transit purposes — without the intent to work.
Purpose
It certifies your legal immigration status in Mexico as a visitor without permission to engage in paid activities.
It allows a stay of up to 180 days (even if you don't plan to stay that long).
Is it the same as a visa?
No. The FMM is not a visa.
Citizens from countries like the United States, Canada, or Schengen Area nations do not need a visa for tourism, but they do need the FMM (in physical, digital, or passport-stamp format).
Available formats
Previously: It was a physical form issued at the point of entry.
Now: It is being replaced by:
A stamp in your passport, or
A digital FMM (FMMd), which can be downloaded from the INM website
after entering Mexico.
How to obtain it
By air:
Upon arrival, the immigration officer will stamp your passport. After that, you can download the digital FMM (FMMd) from the INM website.
By land:
In some land border crossings, the physical FMM form is still issued. If a fee applies, it must be paid at the point of entry.
When is it required?
When entering Mexico for tourism, business, or transit.
When leaving the country, you may need to:
Present the passport stamp, or
Return the physical FMM if you received one.
Requirements
A valid passport.
A valid visa, if required based on your nationality.
Minors also need their own FMM.
Cost
By air: The fee is usually included in the airfare.
By land:
Free if your stay is 7 days or less.
Fee applies for stays over 7 days.
💵 Fee for 2025:
MXN $861 (approximately USD $45)
(for visitors without permission to work)
