𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗱
A sustainable backbend is a balance of strength and softness. To move away from "crunching" the lower back, focus on these three pillars:

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵: Your back body is the engine. Engaging the hamstrings, glutes, and spinal erectors creates the necessary lift to decompress the vertebrae.

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Depth starts at the foundation. Pressing firmly into your hands and feet creates an upward rebound effect that stabilizes the shape.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A healthy curve is a team effort. Instead of hinging at one spot, aim to spread the arc across the entire spine by prioritizing length over depth.

𝗪𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 "𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁" 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝗴𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘁. We label a pose as a "success" if we’re flexible and a "failure" if we’re tight. We treat our practice like a transaction, putting in "good" minutes to get a specific result later.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝗴𝗮 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲.

When we step back from the binary of "good" vs. "bad" movements, we find the strength to sit with the whole picture. The wobbles and the frustrations are just as vital as the moments of ease. They all feed into the next breath.

𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁:

💡Avoid labeling the tight hamstrings as "bad."

💡Notice the transition between the effort and the rest.

💡Experience your full capacity, not just the "perfect" parts.

💡See beyond the narrow margins. See the whole view.

Open the heart by starting with the hips...
We often think of "opening the heart" as a shoulder or chest stretch, but true openness starts much lower.

If the front of the hips (the hip flexors) is tight, it acts like a tether, pulling the chest down. If the back is clenched, it tucks the tailbone and collapses our posture. To find that "lift" in the heart, we must first find space in the hips.

By finding space at the base, we allow the heart to open and the mind to find the quiet it needs to recover.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is get quiet...

🪶Quiet enough to hear your own breath.

🪶Soft enough to feel where you are holding tension.

🪶Still enough to let the dust settle.

True strength doesn't always roar. Sometimes, it’s the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow."

𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 💪❤️

"Opening your heart" in yoga actually starts with your back. To remain open and stable in backbends (large and small), your posterior chain must be strong and active.

This is a beautiful reminder that keeping an open heart to the world requires more than just 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. It requires 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲, and the 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 to show up when things get tough.

This month, we’re exploring that balance. Let’s examine the strength it takes to keep our hearts open on and off the mat.

There is no performance here. There is no right way to feel. It is just a room, some breath, and the permission to let your mind and body feel at ease.
